Polyphemus at Proxima Station

USS Polyphemus at her home base, Proxima Centauri. During the fleet-wide upgrade and modernization program of 2380, Starfleet designed and equip several new ship classes with new technologies. Built at the Proxima Shipyard, the Polyphemus class, also known as the Neo-Thunderchild, is a modern version of the 2330s Thunderchild class strike cruiser.

The Polyphemus class is a 2380s reimagining of my old Lost Era Thunderchild class. The Thunderchild class was originally a smaller strike cruiser, a variant of the Centaur class. After the class was well-received, I decided to create a "neo" version to match my other ships from Starfleet's fleet-wide upgrade and modernization program of the early 2380s.

Like its predecessor, the Polyphemus class is a strike cruiser primarily designed for tactical missions. However, due to its size, it is also equipped with enough scientific modules to handle non-tactical missions. In particular, its two sensor pods make it suitable for scouting and mapping, or search and rescue missions.

Named after the 1881 Royal Navy Polyphemus-class Ironclads, which inspired the HMS Thunder Child in H.G. Wells' novel "The War of the Worlds."
