Ahh they are so awesome! Seriously what do you do to come up with so many completely different designs? Ok just read you answer above. But what are your thoughts when you start with the shape? What makes a shape interesting? Always so inspiring to look at your designs

Thank you so much man! Glad you like them!
In terms of what makes a shape interesting, I try not to worry too much about that, as I find it's the variety in the designs that's important, rather than trying to think of what's interesting, as that can be quite a nebulous concept to try and pin down. That said, I feel it's very important to get a lot of personality in the eyes (I always start the inking with the eyes) - as they help me get a feel for the character, and will in turn inform some of the design choices I make as I ink the rest of the details.

Cheers!

I'm curious how you come up with these concepts.  I mean do they just pop into your head? do you start with a rough outline? do you browse references for inspiration?

Hey pal, I always start with shape, that's the most important part of creating varied designs. I rough out the basic volume and silhouette of the the head, and then add detail from there...

Thanks for the reply.  I love your designs, but I've been stumped as to how you come up with so many creations all uniquely designed.  I guess that's my larger question.

It's all about thinking about each element of the head (jawline, ear shape, eye spacing, skull volume etc, etc, etc, etc...!) in turn, and choosing which elements to exaggerate, and how to position them all in relation to each other. By simply breaking the design down into these basic elements you can iterate to infinity just by tweaking one or two elements each time.

Hope that helps!
