Original and Fanart Stamp by Estell-chan Original and Fanart Stamp by Estell-chan
Okay people, this is something that has been bothering me and you can disagree or agree. Whatever you choose.

I know that many original artists tend to look down on fanartists since it is fanart. While there are some awful fanart out there, there are plenty of amazing fanartists with just as much if not more talent than some of these purists. Also, there are fanartist who have a pretty nasty attitude over this argument and a few who have a poor attitude about original art.

On the other hand I know that I personally can't do only fanart because I feel drained after awhile. But at the same time, I also like to celebrate things I like through my art.

Although I am not advocating both for everyone. People should draw what makes them happy and if that is the case then go right on ahead. I made this stamp for people who are both or support the idea of being both fanartists and original artists.
So I'm both and if you are too then feel free to use this, I can't XD :thumb82661634:

I do love fanarts but I also like original arts.
fokerero Featured By Owner Aug 27, 2015  Student General Artist
I always drew Mario and Sonic characters since I was 8... and before I used to draw other characters.
I now know it's called "fanart" (figured it out when I found DA), and I kinda always made it.

But I also created many characters, stories, I can draw cartoony versions of real people, I draw a lot of things, even though I love and sorta prefer fanart.
I do it with lots of love, and I'm not exagerating.

Also, I'm not even a professional... I guess I'll draw less fanarts when I become one and do it because it is my job!
So I'll create own characters (as I already do).

And then, for the ones who can't understand, fanart is a thing.
Stealing art because you're not able to do your own is another thing.
NitendoFan92 Featured By Owner Jul 24, 2015
original art have a point for at least making effort on originality but fanart can take artistic liberty making it at least more original.

But someone who do awful original art have no escuse against good fanart because talent come first.

My gallery is 95% fanart and fan fiction. Of course, part of the reason I don't upload more originals is because I worry about theft. (Not that I would like it if someone stole my fanarts, either.)
Sia-the-Mawile Featured By Owner Jun 25, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
I draw both original art and fanart.
Detective-May Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2015
I came across a group where they believe fanart trumps original art. I was then banned for drawing more original than fanart, I was very sad.

I think drawing fanart is fine, it's when artists start taking commissions for fanart that bothers me.
HoshiBlue21 Featured By Owner Mar 12, 2014  Student General Artist
REally want to use this, is a very truth what you say people shall draw what make us happy
jord123 Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2014
Aye, I would say so myself. There is plenty of brilliant artwork on both sides to justify this claim.

And I do agree, people should draw what makes them happy.
The only thing that bothers me is that there isn't much original artwork on this site (or at least, not as much as I would prefer). I still think, though, that both original artwork and fan artwork can both celebrate creativity in their own way.
But anyways, good stamp. :)

I agree. I believe art should be judged by its aesthetic value first, and then points like these.

I agree with this stamp. I like original art and fan art. I do not think anyone should judge others by what they draw. If someone drew hundreds of fan arts, that does not make them a lesser artist than an original artist. Some people may feel comfortable with fan art. I can understand if someone is trying to make fan art their own idea, then that would be stealing, but if someone likes drawing fan art because they support someone else's idea, then let them do so.

Up-With-The-Birds Featured By Owner Jun 6, 2011  Hobbyist Photographer
I know! Fanart is just as good! A lot of my art is fanart, because I can make the characters come to life in a way I think is creative and fun. People who don't think fanart is art are crazy. If it took some time, involved the creative process and you are proud of it, it's art.
TwinTwosGirl Featured By Owner May 31, 2011  Professional General Artist
Totally agree! I do both, too. =) To be honest, I will never understand why people have to be at each other’s throats over this issue. The main point of being an artist (of any sort) is to express your feelings through your artwork and, like you pointed out, draw what makes you happy.

When it comes to me and fan art, I find pleasure in drawing my favorite characters. And it also helps me learn to draw different things, too, and helps me in studying different drawing styles a character designs so that I can take what I learned and put it into my original artwork.
Fenori Featured By Owner Apr 13, 2011  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Totally :D Just draw what you want~ at the moment it's fan art for me, haha. But if I eventually tire out, I always have OCs to draw XD Or I could always think of more. Although I'm not in a creating mode atm, so fan art is nice for that too. Anyway, it's nice to have the freedom of drawing what you feel like :D I ramble a lot..
YumeAislinn Featured By Owner Apr 13, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
YES! This. Is. BRILLIANT! People should just draw what they want. I mostly draw original stuff, but sometimes I find myself wanting to draw my favourite character or scene from one of my favourite games. Sometimes I might even poke fun at my fandoms(not in a particulary(sp?) bad way), basically for the sake of being silly and I'll even do this to my own characters. Art is art, regardless of the content.

I an fanartist as well as just artist...
The-last-guardians Featured By Owner Dec 7, 2010

I was, quite recently, going to give up my fanarty ways, because of peer pressure, then I thought 'hang on, nobody tells me what to draw!', so it's stupid, art isn't about what you draw it's about how you draw it

Miyaoka Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2010   Digital Artist
I hate it when people look down on me for drawing my fan characters more than anything else. It's still art, and they're still characters. And just because 80% of my art is fanart, doesn't mean I'm not a good artist. I can draw original things just as well, sometimes even better, than my fanart.

In fact, the teachers at my art school think I'd do well with a career in animation.
Take that, haters!

May I reference to your stamp in my research paper about fanart on dA?
Estell-chan Featured By Owner May 11, 2010
Sure! Also, if you don't mind, I'd also like to read it too if you put it up on the DA.
KonekoMia Featured By Owner May 11, 2010
In that case, I will post on dA so that everyone can read it, I did find some rather interesting information about the history of fanart. So many people have asked to read it, so, why not?

Thank you so much for lettling me reference to your work!:D

Ah thank you. This is needed right now. I hear stuff like this all the time and it drives me nuts. My least favorite. "anime/fan-characters/whatever isn't/doesn't count as art" My response :if they took the time to put work and effort into it than it's art, just because you don't like the style doesn't make it any less of art"

TheDalishRanger Featured By Owner Dec 30, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I prefer drawing originals myself, but I occasionally dabble in fan art - and I always enjoy both from other people. I agree, why can't both be good? The only argument I can see against doing only fan art is if you're trying to make a career out of art; then you usually need to do something of your own thing to get hired by most places. But if you're doing it solely as a hobby/an outlet/etc, what does it matter what you do?
