Happy New Year, everyone! I wish you all joy and happiness in 2014.

Oh! And here's a new chapter.

Chapter 9: Traveling Towards Vermilion City

Several days passed since Ash caught a Charmander. The boy, along with Pikachu, Brock, and Misty, were still on their way towards Vermilion City. As they were walking, they suddenly came across some Pokémon walking nearby. It looked like a plant with a yellow head, which also had pink lips and black beady eyes. The rest of its body looked like a brown stem, with roots that served as its feet. On top of that, each side of its body had a green leaf. Like usual, Ash took his Pokédex to scan the Pokémon.

"Bellsprout. Grass-type and poison-type Pokémon. It eats bugs and walks with the help of its roots." Dexter said.

"And one more Pokémon for me." Ash said in determination as he put his Pokédex back in his pocket. "Pikachu, are you ready?"

"Pika!" the rodent nodded as he took a fighting pose.

"Bellsprout?" the grass/poison-type said as it noticed the electric-type ready to fight it.

"Pikachu, use Thundershock!" the boy exclaimed.

"Pika-CHUUUUUUUUU!" Pikachu exclaimed as he sent electricity towards his opponent.

However, it missed as the Bellsprout dodged the attack in the nick of time.

"Bellsprout." It said as vines came from its leaves and quickly hit the electric-type, making the latter yelp.

"Okay, then... This time, use Quick Attack!" Ash exclaimed.

"Pi! Pi! Pika!" the rodent exclaimed as he ran as fast as he could to hit the grass/poison-type.

The latter dodged the attack by jumping in the air before landing back on the ground.

"Bellsprout!" the grass/poison-type exclaimed as it ran towards a nearby forest, going through bushes.

Ash was surprised to see that Pokémon running away from a fight.

"Hey! Come back here!" the young trainer exclaimed as he chased after the Pokémon and arrived inside the forest.

Ash looked around, but saw no sign of the Bellsprout. He sighed in disappointment.

"Dang it! When I think I could have caught it..." he said to himself.

"Don't be so disappointed." Misty said while she, Brock, and Pikachu came closer to where he was.

"You can't always succeed at catching every Pokémon you come across." The breeder said. "Every trainer will, once in a while, fail at catching certain Pokémon. Just because you failed to catch a certain Pokémon today doesn't mean you won't have a chance to catch that Pokémon again another day."

"I agree with Brock here." The red-haired girl said. "Take me for instance. A while ago, I tried to catch a Goldeen, but I failed despite how powerful Staryu was back then. Later on, I tried to catch yet another Goldeen, and this time I managed to catch it for real. I have no idea if it was due to luck or something else, but I succeeded this time. The point is it's perfectly fine for anyone to fail catching certain Pokémon."

"And besides, who knows? Maybe the Bellsprout is better off living in the wild than living with a human." Brock added.

"Hmm... Yeah, I guess you guys are right." Ash said, smiling before exiting the forest, along with his traveling companions.

Several minutes later, as they were still walking, our heroes noticed some gate in front of them. They immediately assumed it would lead to Vermilion City and they soon arrived next to that gate, where they came across a male officer.

"Hey, sir, can we please go through this gate?" Ash asked the officer.

"I'm sorry, young man, but it won't be possible." The latter replied.

"Why is that?" Brock asked.

"Well, behind that gate, the street leading towards Saffron City is being repaired by construction workers."

"I see." Ash said before realizing what the officer just said. "Wait a minute... Did you just say 'Saffron City'? You're sure you didn't mean 'Vermilion City' instead?"

"No, it is indeed Saffron City I was talking about. Vermilion City is on the other side of Saffron City." The officer replied.

Misty then slapped her forehead at once, slightly embarrassed.

"How could I make such a mistake?" she wondered out loud. "Somehow, I mixed up the names of both cities just like that."

"Don't be so embarrassed. Everyone makes mistakes like that once in a while." The boy from Pallet Town said to her before sighing in a disappointed tone. "That just means it'll take longer to go to Vermilion City than I thought."

"You want to go to Vermilion City? Let me show you a shortcut." The officer said before pointing at what looks like the entrance of a subway entrance. "You see that entrance with the stairs going down? Well, it leads to an underground path that will send you to Route 6. Once you arrive on that route, it won't take too long before you arrive to your destination. This way, you don't need to go through Saffron City if you want to arrive in Vermilion City as soon as possible."

"Alright!" Ash exclaimed, smiling with joy. "Thanks a lot, sir! It'll be really helpful!"

"You're welcome, young man." The officer said, nodding.

The heroes all waved at the officer before going towards the entrance to the underground path. They went down the stairs, where they soon arrived in some long dark hallway. The ceiling, the walls, and the floor were all painted in grey. The heroes noticed how long that hallway was.

"Man... I hope it won't take too long before we arrive at the very end of it." Ash said.

"Pika..." Pikachu said.

"The only way to know the answer to that is to start walking." Brock said as he started walking away.

"Hey! Wait for us!" the young trainer exclaimed as he, Pikachu, and Misty caught up to the breeder.

Several hours passed before the heroes finally reached the end of the hallway. They climbed up the stairs, getting outside the entrance and arriving on Route 6. Ash and his traveling companions all dropped to their knee, tired from walking.

"Geez... That hallway was pretty long." The boy from Pallet Town said, in a tired tone.

"Pika, Pikachu." His Pokémon said, agreeing.

"What did you expect? It's the equivalent of going through a town without any obstacles to block your way and forcing you to make a detour. It's still long, even without those obstacles." Misty said.

"We should probably take a break before continuing on our way." Brock suggested, to which the others nodded.

After a while, they decided the break was long enough and continued on their way towards Vermilion City. Soon enough, they came across a pond. Suddenly, they heard some noises. They quickly realized those noises came from Ash's stomach.

"Heh, heh..." the young trainer said, looking a bit embarrassed. "I think now would be a good moment to eat something."

"Good idea." Brock said before putting his backpack on the ground and getting ready to prepare some meals for himself and his traveling companions.

Several minutes later, the heroes were all sitting on a picnic blanket, all of them eating rice balls made by the breeder.

"Oh, they taste so good, Brock." Misty said, enjoying those rice balls.

"Yeah, I love those jelly donuts." Ash said, enjoying them as well.

The teenager stopped eating as he turned around and arched an eyebrow at the boy from Pallet Town.

"Did you just call them 'jelly donuts'?" Brock asked.

"Yeah. Why?"

"...They're rice balls, not jelly donuts."

"Oh..." Ash said, looking more embarrassed then when his stomach was making noise. "Hum... Sorry." He said, rubbing the back of his head.

"Don't worry. Just make sure you get the name right next time." Brock said, looking amused at the mistake Ash did.

"Okay then." The young trainer said. He was about to eat another rice ball before looking at Misty and thought about something. "Hey, Misty... Can I ask you something?"

"What is it?" the red-haired girl asked.

"I was wondering... Do you have a goal in your life?"

"A goal?"

"Yeah. I mean, take me for example. I want to be a Pokémon Master someday. Or take a look at Brock. He wants to be a great Pokémon Breeder. So... Is there some goal like that you hope to achieve?"

"Well, now that you mention it..." the girl said, smiling. "I want to be the greatest Water-Type Pokémon Trainer in the world!" she exclaimed with determination, raising her fist in the air.

"How do you plan on getting to that goal?" Brock asked.

"Oh, I think I've got a pretty good idea. I'll show the world I can train ANY kind of water-type Pokémon. Whether it's a Goldeen, a Dewgong, or any other Pokémon like those, I'll be able to do marvelous things with them. THAT'S how I plan to do it."

"Okay... That seems like a good way to get to your goal." Ash said, nodding.

"It seems like it'll take a while before you get to it, but I'm sure if you put enough effort into it, you'll succeed, Misty." The breeder said.

"Yeah, what he said." The boy from Pallet Town said, agreeing.

"Pika, Pika, Pikachu." The rodent nodded.

"Thanks, guys." The red-haired girl said, smiling at their kind words.

A few minutes later, the heroes were done eating their food. They soon got ready to go towards Vermilion City.

"Alright, guys. Let's move on." Ash said.

Just before they could walk away towards their destination, they heard some noises coming from a nearby bush. The heroes looked at the bush, curious to see what was inside of it.

"What is it, now?" the boy from Pallet Town wondered out loud.

A few seconds later, a Pokémon appeared from that bush and stood in front of it. It looked like a yellow duck with a rounded body and a tail. It had a cream-colored beak, cream-colored webbed feet, two hands with three fingers each that were as sharp as claws, and three tufts of black hair on top of its head.

"Psy... duck." The Pokémon said, looking quite dopey with its eyes.

"Let's hear what Dexter has to say." Ash said before taking his Pokédex.

"Psyduck. Water-type Pokémon. It uses various mysterious powers." Dexter said.

"Psy. Psyduck." The bird said.

"That Pokémon looks rather... odd." Misty said, arching an eyebrow at the Pokémon.

The Psyduck then walked towards the pond. As it arrived at the edge of it, it looked at its reflection in the water before stretching out.

"What is it doing?" Ash wondered out loud.

"I think it's readying itself before swimming in the pond." Brock guessed.

After a few seconds of stretching, the water-type nodded to itself before jumping in the air and diving into the pond. Several seconds later, the Psyduck emerged from the water, panicking as it seemed to have trouble swimming. The heroes looked alarmed at the sight of that.

"I'm coming!" Misty exclaimed as she dropped her backpack into the ground and removed her shoes before running barefoot towards the pond.

She dove into the pond and swam towards the still panicking Psyduck as fast as she could. The red-haired girl reached the water-type Pokémon, grabbed it by the hand, and brought it back on the shore. The two of them were catching their breath after this event.

"Are you alright?" Misty asked the Psyduck.

"Psy." The bird said.

"Misty! Is everything okay?" Ash asked as he, Pikachu, and Brock arrived next to them, bringing the girl's backpack and shoes to her.

"Yeah, everything's fine. I'm wet, but it'll dry off in no time" She said as she put back her shoes on and grabbed her backpack. "Although..." she added as she looked at the Psyduck. "It seems strange that this Pokémon isn't able to swim."

"I agree. That's the first time I see a water-type Pokémon being unable to swim." The boy from Pallet Town said, arching an eyebrow at the Psyduck.

"Psy. Psyduck." The latter stood up and started walking away.

While this was happening, Misty sighed.

"I hope that Psyduck will be fine." The girl said.

"I'm sure he will." Brock said.

"Alright then... Let's go to Vermilion City." She said as she stood up.

At the same time as the heroes were starting to leave, the Psyduck stopped on its tracks, turned around, and looked at them leaving. It turned its head to the side, looking curiously at the heroes.

"Psy? Psyduck." The water-type Pokémon nodded to itself before walking towards the heroes.

Several seconds later, Misty looked behind her and noticed to her surprise that the Psyduck was following them.

"What the...? Why is it following us?" she wondered out loud, getting the attention of Ash, Pikachu, and Brock.

"Huh?" the boy from Pallet Town said before noticing the water-type behind them.

"What do you want, Psyduck?" Misty asked as she came next to the Pokémon.

"Psyduck." The latter replied.

"Hmm... Maybe it's just me, but I think it might want to join us." Brock said as he thought about it.

"Wait, what?" the girl said, not sure if it's a good idea to bring a water-type who doesn't even know how to swim.

"Think about it. You just saved its life. So, as a way of being grateful to you, it probably decided to follow you and become one of your Pokémon. I'm simply guessing, so I'm not entirely sure if that's the case." The breeder explained.

"Come to think of it, that might be part of the reason Charmander decided to join me the other day." Ash thought out loud, thinking about when he pushed the fire-type out of the way when a stalactite was falling down on them.

"Pika, Pika!" Pikachu nodded to what his trainer just said.

"Psy-ay-ay!" Psyduck exclaimed as it held its head with both hands.

"Oh, dear..." Misty said, worried at the way it was holding its head. "You have a headache too?"

"Hmm... Maybe Dexter has a few more information about that Pokémon." the boy from Pallet Town said before using his Pokédex again.

"Psyduck are always suffering from headaches." Dexter said.

"WHAT?!" Misty yelled in shock when she heard that. "You're telling me that thing can't swim AND has constant headaches!?"

Because of that, she didn't look where she stepped on as she accidentally tripped on a nearby rock, causing her to fall on her back. This also caused one of her Poké Balls to be thrown away from her backpack and to land right next to the Psyduck. The latter looked at the Poké Ball curiously. The water-type touched the Poké Ball once with its right hand, causing it to grow to regular size.

"Psyduck." It said before touching the device a second time.

This time, the water-type turned into a red light and entered the Poké Ball. The latter barely shook around before confirming that Misty had, indeed, managed to catch the Psyduck. The girl looked at the Poké Ball in disbelief.

"I can't believe it..." she said before groaning and pulling her hair in annoyance. "I just can't believe it! There's no way this is happening!"

"Come on, Misty. It's not so bad." Ash said, trying to reassure her.

"Not so bad?!" the girl said as she stood up and glared at the boy. "I've caught a water-type Pokémon that doesn't even know how to swim! It's like having an ice-type Pokémon that doesn't know how to survive in a cold, frozen area!"

Ash frowned at the way Misty was talking to him.

"Didn't you just say you wanted to prove to the world you can train ANY water-type Pokémon? If anything, that Psyduck should be a good way for you to do that." The young trainer said. "If not, I don't know how else you can reach your goal..."

"Oh, yeah?!" Misty said, looking insulted. "I'll show you and everyone else that I can be the greatest Water-Type Pokémon Trainer! And if that Psyduck is a good way to do it, then so be it!" she furiously exclaimed before grabbing the Poké Ball and putting it inside her backpack. "And now, let's go!" she added as she continued towards Vermilion City.

Ash, Pikachu, and Brock all nodded before they ran after her.

Hiding inside a bunch of bushes, three certain criminals were waiting patiently for something to happen as they looked at the road next to them.

"Are you sure this is going to work?" James asked the others.

"Of course it's going to work." Jessie replied. "We've been spying the twerps for the past few days and we know for certain they'll go to Vermilion City. And this road leads directly to said town."

"And unlike last time, we made sure to identify where the covered hole we dug is so that an idiot like you wouldn't fall into it like last time." Meowth said, glaring at the blue-haired man.

"I told you I was sorry for it!" James exclaimed, sheepishly.

"Shh!" Jessie hushed them. "I hear someone coming."

Discreetly, Team Rocket looked to their right and noticed Ash, Pikachu, Brock, and Misty coming nearby.

"Our plan is finally going to work." The feline whispered with glee.

The three criminals observed as the 'twerps' were getting closer to where the hole was. Jessie, James, and Meowth looked at them in anticipation.

And then...

Ash and his traveling companions walked past the covered hole, stepping on it and yet not falling into it, and continuing on their way. At this moment, Team Rocket looked at the heroes in disbelief.

"What..." Jessie began to say.

"...just..." James continued.

"...happened?" Meowth ended the question.

Frustrated, the long-haired woman got out of the bush, stepped onto the road, and glared at the heroes, who were getting further and further away from them.

"That's impossible! There's no way they couldn't have avoided falling down!" she exclaimed in disbelief and frustration.

"Let's run after them if we want that Pikachu!" Meowth exclaimed as he and James appeared on the road as well.

"Yeah!" the blue-haired man agreed.

"Hold on a minute." Jessie said as she extended her arms, preventing the other two from going any further. "You seem to forget the hole we dug is still in front of us. You wouldn't want us to fall into it like last time."

"Oh, come on, Jessie. Just think about it." The feline said. "If three humans and one Pokémon were able to walk past the hole despite their combined weight, then two humans and one Pokémon wouldn't have any problem walking past over it either."

"He does seem to have a point, Jessie." James said.

"Oh, alright then." The long-haired woman shrugged at that before the three of them walked towards the covered hole.

Unfortunately for them, as soon as they stepped on it, they fell down the hole, yelping in alarm. A few seconds later, they all landed on top of each other.

"Ouch..." James groaned in pain.

"Ow..." Jessie complained as she rubbed her back before gritting her teeth in frustration. "How is that even possible!? How come those twerps managed to avoid falling down but we didn't!? This defies any kind of logic!" she yelled before furiously pounding the ground with her fist.

"Maybe if you didn't gain that much weight within the past few months..." Meowth began to say.

He was immediately interrupted as Jessie grabbed him and angrily shook him around, making him feel nauseous.

"Insult me like that once more and I swear I'll make sure you run out of your nine lives soon enough!" she yelled in annoyance.

"Stop that, I'm getting sick!" the feline exclaimed in a dazed tone.

"Could you guys please move over from my back?" James politely asked. "You're still crushing me."

"Were you implying something about my weight as well?" Jessie asked the blue-haired man, glaring at him.

"Hum... No. Not at all." He nervously replied.

"Good, then." She said before going back to shaking Meowth around.

While Team Rocket were bickering among themselves, Ash and his traveling companions continued walking for about an hour until they saw a town in the distance.

"That must be it!" Ash exclaimed in excitement as he started to run towards the town, with Pikachu, Brock, and Misty also running behind him.

The heroes ran up until they reached a sign that read 'Vermilion City' on it.

"Woo-ooh! We finally arrived!" the boy from Pallet Town cheered at the sight of that.

"Pikachu!" the rodent cheered as well.

"It's about time. I was getting tired from walking." Misty said, rubbing her legs. "Right now, I just want to go to the Pokémon Center to rest for a bit."

"Sounds like a good idea to me." Brock said.

The heroes didn't waste any more time next to the sign as they immediately headed towards the Pokémon Center of this town.

End of chapter.

The heroes finally arrived in Vermilion City and Misty managed to catch Psyduck. In the next chapter, they will visit the S.S. Anne.
