Rose's Idiot's Lantern Dress Full View

I realized I don't have a photo of the whole entire dress, so I decided I should take a picture of it on my dress form. :)

This is Rose Tyler's dress/costume from the Doctor Who episode The Idiot's Lantern. Although I'm not fond of the episode (I find it very scary) I love the dress Rose wears. It's pink, sparkly, and very girly. Since I always wanted a pink dress covered in sequins before I ever heard of Rose Tyler, I decided to make this dress extra special and make it out of satin along with hand sew all the sequins onto the top. It was hard, and time consuming, but I did became very good at hand sewing!

I do plan on using this dress besides costume/cosplay purposes and wear it to special events if the need ever rises. (I made this dress with this in mind)

This picture was taken with the underskirt/slip/petticoat I made to go with the dress underneath the skirt.

The whole entire dress was made by me and it took me about five months to complete the whole thing. And yes, I'm very proud of the work I did on this dress and wish I could wear this dress more. ^_^

I've got a question, if you wouldn't mind giving me the answer. How did you do the skirt portion of the dress? Is it a circle skirt? If it is, then how did you do the measurements to get those beautiful pleats at the waist? I'm in the process of planning my own Rose cosplay and I'm getting stumped at the skirt portion of the dress, for sure.

Oh! No problem! I'm glad to help! Sorry this is such a long explanation. I think I might need to make a tutorial on how to make skirts like this because I haven't found any tutorials on how to make skirt the way I do. :D

I used Simplicity pattern number 2440 view F for the whole entire dress, skirt included. I didn't modify the actual skirt pattern, but the instructions said to cut out two to three skirt pieces (I don't remember exactly how many the pattern called for). The skirt pattern isn't very full, so I cut out another skirt piece to add fullness. After that, I made four triangular inserts to go between each of the skirt pieces.

I made the triangle insert patterns from scratch. You can find out how to make inserts like the one I made for the dress here: [link] I don't remember how large I made the bottom of the triangle inserts, but I do remember I measured the length of the skirt pattern I was using and made the triangle inserts a little longer just in case I needed more fabric for the hem.

I made the pleats by folding the skirt in half, pinning where the fold was, and repeating the whole entire process. I made sure that when I folded the skirt, I matched the pins I used for the fold. (I used pins with different ends so I could match the different pin ends together.) I did this over and over again until I had eight pins in the skirt. I then did the same thing to the bodice until I had eight pins on the bottom of the bodice. (I also used the trick by matching the pin ending together on the bodice.) Then I pinned each pinned part of the skirt to the bodice. After that, I folded the extra fabric into the pleat facing the direction I wanted it to be folded in.

Here's a link the pattern I used for the dress. It's out of print now, but there are other patterns similar to this one that you can use to make the skirt as well. [link]

I hope this helped! If anything I talked about confused you, don't be a afraid to ask and I'll try to explain it better. Just so you know, I made the pleats the way I did because I don't like to measure pleats and this was my way of "cheating". ;)

You are so good at making these clothes Mary! If you didn't draw so well I'd tell you to quit and be a designer... so pretty!
