Description

Here's a nice little sketch I did for my Low Fantasy setting, haven't done that in a while. It's very self explanatory: Garrick kills the Dragon.

But part of the reason I wanted to make this setting was a bit of a gripe I had with 'modern' dragons, what with the more 'classical' Romano-Greek-Chinese dragon basically being a big snake. While it's not 1;1 a Titanoboa, I imagined up a sort of very smart, big, beefy, mean, and social snake species that plagues the tropics and warm waters of this world, they go after livestock and people and fish, and hoard things. Things, like cats - could be gold. Could be wheels. Could be jewels. Could be skulls. Works enough - and definitely would be a pain and a problem that need to be dealt with.

Thankfully, it seems our heroic stranded Not!German Garrick has dealt with the problem. Surely this will be the end of this draconic horror on this totally tranquil island embroiled in a four way war. What's that? Eggs? Eh, don't worry about it. Takes Dragons like ten years to grow to maturity, anyway.

I imagine Fabricus or the Prefect of the town affected sent Garrick some older arms, like the Roman belt (Cingulum Militare with Pensilia - the hanging 'apron' strands) there, or the pteruges and 'yoke', the shoulder armor - both for more 'protection' and to bite a bit of the glory by equipping him with their older arms to claim some credit in the slaying. By this 'time period' (the 500s) those pieces of equipment would be long forgotten, but hey. It is practical when dealing with something that can lunge and plunge two teeth into the family jewels or the neck....

Text reads: Garrick, in Insula (relictus), Draconem Interficit. Or, Garrick, stuck on the island, kills the Dragon. It should also go on to read 'with Crespuclan arms', but ah well. I was inspired by what I thought was a painting of either Saint George or Saint Michael killing their dragons, but I couldn't find a equivalent picture, I must had just mashed them up in my mind.

Made in GIMP. Used a 20 pt round brush mostly for this, I think it came out great, with 11 pt and 4 pt for detailing. Update: some details, doubled image size for clarity. added Garrick's cheek arrow scar.
