As the title says: I'm looking for a group to join and hope for your suggestios!
However, it shouldn't be just ANY group, there are a few criteria it should meet:

- It should be a group that doesn't treat traditional art worse than digital art.
I'm really, really tired of watching and commenting on every one else's art and get mine declined every time, because traditional art is considered less worthy. So it should either be a group for traditional art only, or the founders/contributors should be experienced enough to reasonably judge the skill level in a traditional piece. They may decline submissions (traditional and digital alike) for poor quality- but not traditional art in general, just because the colors are a bit less shiny, or because you have limited options working on paper.

- Not ALL art should be accepted. Finding a group that accepts all skill levels is fairly easy. I wish for a group that specialises on artists who are a bit more experienced and actually consider drawing a long-term hobby or their profession. Obviously, I'm not looking for a group that accepts the stars of DA only (they wouldn't accept me xD), but that shouldn't mean that every pencil sketch on toilet paper should be accepted into the gallery.

- It should not discriminate against certain art styles or media.
Really... A group that says in their rules: "we accept all styles, do whatever you like! Just don't post your manga trash"... is NOT what I am looking for. I love to look at higher quality art, no matter which style.
Also, what is manga style and what is not? My drawings regularly get declined, because they're too manga for one group not manga enough for others. Can't you just accept that I have my own style? Thanks.

- It should be active. Obviously xD

- It may be related to a certain topic. For example water color art, colored pencil art, fantasy, flowers, etc...
(Preferably something that fits my gallery, of course xD)

- Optional: It would be REALLY nice if it was common in that group to not just post your art, but also interact with others. ^^

Soo... suggestions?
What would your dream group be like?
Do you know that feeling? It's really important that you draw something really special, something that shows the top of your abilities... The topic is easy and it's something that you usually could do in your sleep.
However, you know that, this time, it has to be really good, for whatever reason... and suddenly it's as if you had never held a pencil in your hand before? XD

When you look at a Deviation, there's usually that bar on the right saying "More from [Artist]".
Having been on Deviantart for 10 years now, my gallery is full of drawings that aren't on my current niveau. I still love many of them, considering that I put tons of work and love in all of them - but I wonder if it would be better to move them to the scrap section.
After all, I've been quite active on DA the past 10 years, but my number of watchers is... well, not very high, compared to others who I estimate to be on my level. I guess, if I want to stand out, it would be better to prevent the "More from Ermelin"-bar from showing my old drawings. So if someone new comes across my Deviations and are curious to see more of my gallery, they won't come across the older stuff first...

The only way to do that is to sort out my old work. I already did so- but it hurts and I know there's even more old stuff that I really shouldn't keep in my gallery.

Have you ever been confronted with the same question? What did you do?

#deviantartistquestionnaire

How long have you been on DeviantArt?

For exactly 10 years today! I didn't get an account on Deviantart's birthday on purpose, it was pure coincidence.

    What does your username mean?

Ermelin is the name of a character in a novel I've been working on since I was 14 (which I still didn't finish so far).
However, I have been using this name to sign my drawings since 2003 and got so accustomed to being called "Ermelin" (even by my best friends) that I changed the name of the protagonist in my novel. It didn't feel right to have a protagonist with a name that feels as if it was my own one. :giggle:

    Describe yourself in three words.

artist with cat

Are you left or right handed?

I was born left handed, but I was asked to use my right hand when I was little. Now there are some things I do with my left hand and some that I do with the right one. For example, I use the left hand to switch on the stove or grab the keys in my pocket, but the right hand to spread butter on bread. I wouldn't use the left hand for things the right hand usually does and the other way round.

    What was your first deviation?

I'm pretty sure it was the "Lady of the Lake", as I submitted this drawing the day I got an account here.

What is your favourite type of art to create?

Traditional paintings with water colors. Especially I like Artist Trading Cards = ATCs. (Look it up on wikipedia, if you don't know what this is ^^)

If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

I would love to be able to paint water like William Turner in his twenties.

    What was your first favourite?

"Belly rubs are love" by celesse x3
Belly rubs are love by celesse

What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Digital drawings with a dark/mysterious atmosphere.

Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

It used to be Katy Towell who had the username ChilrenRScary. She did some awesome scary short movies. Unfortunately, she seems to have deleted her account some years ago. (I think you can find her on youtube now.)
Anyway, I have quite a number of artists which I love to watch. I don't think I can choose only one of them ^^"
For example, there are faQy (for her unsual style), Little-Miss-Boxie and ROS-SI (for their great way of storytelling) and Kibbitzer (for all the great fanart <3)

If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

That's impossible to decide. I would love to have a huge meeting with many people I met here <3 <3

How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

There are several people here who are a great inspiration to me every day! I wouldn't be able to list all of them here (for fear of forgetting someone). Thank you for being there and talking to me so often - and most of all: for being patient, as I know that I sometimes need far too much time to reply to nice comments.

What are your preferred tools to create art?

A pencil with Rotring leads (because they don't break easily), water colors from VanGogh and Schmincke, white chinese ink from Deleter (great to fix mistakes or lighten up areas of a painting), Fantasia colored pencils and water color paper from Gerstaecker.

What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

My sister's old room. Since she moved out, I have all of my tools here, plenty of space, a soft place for my cat and in summer the temperatures here are bearable <3

What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

There are three memories I like to think of very much:

One of them was when I was accepted into a group for children's book artists and got tons of friendly feedback from professional artists all over the world. I always had a certain style that's neither realistic, nor manga-like, but more suitable for kids. Since I usually hung around in manga/anime fan communities, I never got much attention for any of my drawings. One time, I even got told I should stop drawing stuff for children, as nobody would like to see these boring drawings and I shouldn't waste my talent on this. The new Deviantart group told me for the first time that my style was OKAY and even beautiful. I'm forever thankful for meeting people who understood me.

The second one was when STelari featured me in her journal out of the blue. At first, I didn't see the feature and wondered why there were tons of comments and favs in my gallery that day. Then a random user on another art community (where I'm a bit more known than here) posted on the Forums: "Oh my God, look at this! STelari on Deviantart featured Ermelin!"
I can't tell you how happy I was! That really was an honor ^////^

My third great memory returns every year: Halloween on Deviantart! I live in a country where Halloween doesn't really exist. So I totally love browsing Deviantart every October 31st to admire carved pumpkins and gorgeous creepy paintings!

Okay, why not? XD I got tagged by :iconchibli-chan:, but I'm an evil person, so I'm changing the rules:

1. You must post these rules.
2. Each person has to share 10 facts about themselves.
3. Answer the 10 questions asked by the person who tagged you and make up 10 questions for the 10 you tag.
4. Choose 10 people and put their icons in your journal.
5. You have to legitimately tag 10 people. If I don't, am I going to get eaten by alpacas?
6. No tag-backs.
7. You can't say that you don't do tags. Yes I can. "I don't do tags." See? It works XD
8. You MUST make a journal entry!

10 facts about myself:
1. In my youth, I refused to pass on so many e-mail chain letters that I won't get kissed until I'm approximately 730 years old.
2. I'm not Chuck Norris, but I changed the rules of this tag game, although it said I couldn't. Now I feel powerful.
3. I've got two Bachelor degrees - one in Early- and Prehistorical Archaeology and one in Social Work. (Yes, this combination does make sense, take a minute to think about it, if you don't believe me ^^")
4. Archaeologists don't dig up dinosaurs. Really XD (Unless they happen to take part in a paleontologic excavation, but it's usually not their job.)
5. I look like a wallflower in reallife, so people are often shocked to find out that I've actually got a very evil black humor.
6. My favourite animal when I was 4 years old was a Deinonychus (a dinosaur). One of my children's books explained in pictures how they lured their prey into a trap and killed it as a team. I loved their intelligence...
7. I like to mix Coca Cola with all kinds of fruit juices.
8. My gallery is full of cute and colorful things, while my favourites are full of grey/dark/bloody horror stuff.
9. I like to create websites, just by using HTML, CSS and a text editor.
10. Ever since I was 15, I dreamed of working at a fast food restaurant for a few weeks, just to find out what it's like. I never got a chance to do so.

Answers to Chibli-chans 10 questions:
1, Seen the banned pokemon episode about James? Mmm.

No, I never knew there was a banned episode.

2. Ever had a battered mars bars? ioshfgergrthtyh.

Ewww, yes, I once bought one at school. Battered, melted, dried again and with chocolate that had turned from brown to white.

3.&4.

I can't reply to that, due to the fact that my brain tends to delete unnecessary information quite quickly ^^"

5. Have you ever stolen something before?
One time, when I was a small child (not even in primary school), I did something that comes close to stealing. A teenage girl had tidied up her room and given me a toy as present that she didn't want anymore. I loved it so much that I was devastated when she decided she wanted it back. So I reluctantly agreed to return it, but hid it and hoped she wouldn't ask for it again.
However, I developed such a bad conscience, that I even took my pocket money to buy a spare part and make it better, before I finally returned it to her.

6. Can I come live with you?

Ah, I'm afraid I'm about to move into such a small flat that there's no room for one more person D: I heard there was much space in the basement under the house, though... a bit dark and cold and creepy maybe... and you might hear the tram over your head every 10 minutes. Oh and it's close to one of the city's largest cemeteries, so you never know if there weren't any graves in this place before the house was built ^^°

7. Would you have sex with the opposite sex for €/£/$50,000?

No, I would never do so for money- neither with the same, nor with the other sex. (I don't judge people who do so, though. It's their own choice ^^)

8. Be a darling and let me dress you up to how I please?

I doubt you can do worse than I do myself XD

9. Can you daydream at night?

Of course you can, especially when it's night and you're not asleep yet.

10. Why can't we tickle ourselves?

Because... well, that's what I love Wikipedia for xD en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tickling…

My questions:

1. What's your favourite color combination?
2. If you were collecting art, would there be a motif/topic you'd prefer? Like, for example, a stamp collector who collects flower stamps only?
3. What's your favourite book? (If you don't like reading, then what's your favourite film?)
4. What is it about and why do you like it?
5. Do you consider yourself to be an artist?
6. Think of the last person you talked to (either online or in reallife). What do you like the most about this person?
7. If you visit "What's hot" or the Newest Deviation section on DA, what makes you want to click on a certain piece of art?
8. Did you ever achieve something in your life that you are really proud of? (Don't be modest ^^)
9. If you could live in a different time, a different country/culture or even in a fantasy world, where would you like to go? Or would you like to stay where you are?
10. If you had to choose between being highly intelligent but unlucky in life and being stupid like a piece of toast but happy everyday... what would you prefer to be?

I tag...
nobody, because I only know people who would probably consider this impolite ^^; Feel free to continue this game, though. I'm curious about your replies to my questions. ^^

The cuddly guy on the photo below is Lord Voldemort, my sister's cat :meow: In the evening, when I sit here drawing, he often lies on the old bed behind me.
Today I noticed that he has an awesome taste in music :giggle: While painting, I usually watch DVDs which I already know well, so it's not silent and I don't get distracted. After a while I found out that my cat comes more often, if I watch certain films and I wondered why... Now I think he actually likes the music :O_o: He's the third cat we ever had - the fifth one if I count in two neighbour cats who visited us often, but none of them ever reacted on music like he does.

Today I just started my playlist on youtube with piano pieces played by youtube users, sat on the bed and he came over to cuddle with me. His favourite music piece seemed to be the theme song of Forest Gump - I never heard him purr this loudly before XD When there came a pop song after this one, he suddenly started to bite me, like he usually does if I stop doing something he likes XD
So I skipped the pop song and we listed to "Comptine d'un autre été" (the song from Amélie). Instantly he was happy again and climbed on my lap. Also, he seemed to love Rose's theme from Titanic- but he cringed when the musician hit a wrong note XD And he hated the prologue of Beauty and the Beast because the player sometimes hit the keys too hard- his ears went up and twitched every time this happened. When we finally listened to Casper's Lullaby, he fell asleep. *__*
After that one, there came a calm pop song again - His head shot up and he looked at me as if he wanted to say: "How dare you listen to something that awful?!" XD

Has anyone else of you have a cat which reacts like this to music? <3

My cuddly Muse by Ermelin
Though I'm usually not a person who enjoys to complain about everything, there's something bugging me here on Deviantart: As a member of several groups, I feel a little discriminated for my style...
Manga communities won't accept my drawings, because I'm no manga artist - No problem here, for I'm no fan of the usual anatomy traits used in manga art anyway.
However, if I try to submit my works to traditional art groups not specialised on manga, they're often declined because of my 'manga-like' style. Oh yeah, thanks for telling me my paintings aren't art because I don't like abstract paintings or 100% realistic stuff. I'm just myself, neither realistic, nor manga-like... but obviously just enough of both to be declined by both groups of people.

And of course, a while ago one of my drawings was declined by a sci-fi-group, because it was traditional art, not digital. Though I used water colors, the motive was still a science-fiction setting - but somehow that doesn't count..? It wasn't in the group rules that traditional art was forbidden...

Also, I'm not amused by people who tell me that Artist Trading Cards aren't real art, because they're small - If you think so, please keep in mind that most of my ATCs require 10-25 hours of work each. My cards are planned as large-scale paintings, but drawn on a very, very small size. The small size doesn't make it easier, but a lot harder for me. Of course, there really are ATcs out there which didn't take a lot of time because their creators do see them as quick works - That's okay of course! However, if some people thought about it just a minute, they might see that I take the small size as a challenge, not as a way to save time.

I'm sorry, but I really need to vent my anger somewhere now. I'm disappointed, guys... Isn't art about being free to develope the style you feel comfortable with? I won't change my style to fit into a group, even if that means I'll stay an unknown artist forever.
I just left a few groups and also unwatched them, because I don't see why I should sacrifice my time to comment on group galleries in which I'm not accepted myself. Of course, the galleries might still be interesting to me and it's not the fault of the the artists, but it hurts to use my free time to let others know that I saw and appreciated their work, while my own work gets declined, because some group admin placed it at the same level with 10 minute pencil sketches of a beginner, just because of the reasons above.

(Of course, I can still be part of Artist Trading Card groups or fanart groups where the style doesn't matter as long as you draw a certain character - or of groups which accept just everything, even if it's a scanned piece of toilet paper - But I hope you get my point.)
So my sister and me are going to fly to London in about 3 weeks. I'm so excited! :D
We got some really cheap flight tickets from Ryanair and a hotel room that's actually not too expensive for two students.

Now I just need to pack my water colors and... wait! It's not allowed to travel with colors on a plane
I was quite amused about some of the things you are not allowed to carry in your bag. Stuff like: crossbows, chain saws, bushwhackers or a catapult... How can I live without my catapult? :faint:
I just recovered from the shock that my poor pet catapult will need to stay at home, when I read that rule about colors!!!
Oh my... Does anyone know if this applies to water colors as well? I can see why it would be dangerous to transport spray cans or tubes, but I planned to buy some special water colors in London which are hard to get in Germany ^^;
Hi there!

I'm not sure if anyone is still watching my journal, as i never really used this. Still, I hope to reach someone out there who has a creative idea to help me ;D Has anyone of you ever made some handicrafts out of beverage cans?

When I was a child, I was collecting beverage cans with pictures on them. I have the complete collection of Star Wars Pepsi cans from 1999, some Pokémon cans, even an Italian can with Christmas polar bears on it... XD I really liked them at that time and stacked them on the top of a shelf. Until today, there are about 30 of them left (of course I cleaned the empty cans carefully! XD).
Now I feel a little too old for keeping this collection in my bedroom, but... how could I throw them away? XD I wonder if it is possible to make something creative out of them. Maybe cut them open and make a box out of them (like patch work blankets from fabric remnants), or file folders, something like that... It should be something that doesn't take much space and isn't just a dust catcher.

Does anyone out there have an idea which he'd share with me?
It's been quite a while since I have really been active on deviantart. I'm really sorry for all of my friends who did not hear anything of me for about... well... one or two years? =(
I would not promise that I am back now- as I study at a university now and my only holidays are about 2 weeks on christmas. I must admit that my life is not what I dreamed of for my life after school... The longer I study, the more I realize that it is still my dream to do something related to art in my future life. Archaeology was a dream as well and I still love it- but I just can't imagine living and working as an archaeologist. Especially as there are no jobs out there. *sigh*
However, I don't want to bother you with that topic, I'm sorry.

The reason for this entry is that I wanted to tell you that I did not forget those wonderful people I met here. I think of you from time to time. Please don't be angry with me... I just don't have time at the moment.

By the way- Today I deleted about half of my gallery and submitted some new drawings, which I have drawn in the last months. I just think them to be better than my old ones. ^^;

My dear :iconartemcoloria: tagged me.
Here's what I have to do:

The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/things about yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to chose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours....

So here we go!
Enjoy!

1. Sometimes I talk in German and think in English or the other way round. Sometimes this works with French and Latin as well... (Not that I could actually talk in French or Latin... ^^; )

2. I like to leave weard pencil sketches on every page of my friends' biology exercise books. Usually they contain some big black eyes and a little sentence to underline my wisdom, such as "I like chocolate."

3. I am 18 years old and I still love fairy tales.

4. Whenever I do not know what to say, I give a little "meow!".

5. If I die tomorrow, it's probably because I will be eaten by a black dragon whose favourite meal are poor little virgins... *sigh*

6. ...according to the prophecy. X)
