Also known as "panserbjammies."

(Carlos, Cecil, and their daemons. Pajamafied armor design is inspired by this very-armadillo-like Iorek Byrnison. Khoshekh gets a matching hat; Isaña already matches the theme by nature.)

Isaña looks positively embarassed for them. Or am I reading too much into her curled up position?

Nah, that's just how she hangs naturally. There's a limit to how much her species can unroll =)

This is about as weird as Carlos's clothing tastes get, so he's relieved to have a boyfriend who not only goes along with it, but makes it look normal by comparison.

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

On an unrelated note, does Isaña know the 'Just so story' "How the Armadillo came to be?"

Definitely. I think any time a daemon settles, they and their human go looking for all the fiction and folklore about that animal they can find =)

Do you think, Cecil aside, that more mythic in nature daemons are even possible?  I ask because in the HDM boos Lyra's daemon pops in and out of a dragon form several times, but one never hears about an adult with a dragon daemon. Or a pegasus. Or a griffin.

Huh, I'm surprised Pullman left that in. There were other weird bits of worldbuilding in the first edition of The Golden Compass (like a mention of someone with a human-shaped daemon), but those got removed in the revised printings. The form is described as dog-sized -- maybe Pan was supposed to have become a Komodo dragon...?

I feel like daemons should emphasize how natural the soul and the personality are, so they should end up as animals that have real-life behavior you can study and reference, not animals that only exist in the human imagination in the first place. So no pegasi daemons for Lyra's world. In something like the Harry Potter world, it's probably common to have daemons shaped like nifflers, kneazles, hippogriffs, and so on. And in Night Vale you get mythic, folkloric, otherworldly, and otherwise-weird daemons because those things are normal within the weirdness filter of the area.

In the version I read it very distinctly describes Pan as a bright red Chinese dragon, something about showing off how creative they were. I figured after meeting McDaniels, no one's  daemon would be able to turn into a dragon in Nightvale.  But I do love the skvader and the phoenix.
