Liberalverse sketchdump by ErinPtah Liberalverse sketchdump by ErinPtah
A bunch of random sketches featuring liberal!"Stephen".

I think it helps make him look Stephenish if his hair still has that wave in the front, showing the effects of the widow's peak.

While c!Stephen's temper is set off by the smallest things, l!Stephen doesn't think he's allowed to get mad even when he has a legitimate reason to. Thus the splash of anger in the upper right.

It's fun to come up with clothes for him. He'll consent to wear a suit on-air, but he likes loose, comfortable shirts with neat patterns (bottom left), or the esoteric logos of obscure bands.

Since c!Stephen has a crush he can't fathom on Jane Fonda, would l!Stephen have a crush he can't fathom on Sarah Palin? Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin might also work. (Or if you want to keep it an actor: Jon Voight.)

A thought on l!Stephen: both of them have a common heritage in that they're both the products of Real Stephen, a Democrat. Thus, c!Stephen and l!Stephen stem from left-wing stereotypes, where Conservatives are unthinking and inelegant and Liberals are wishy-washy push overs.

Here's a fun meta exercise for you: how would c!Stephen and l!Stephen look if they were created by an AU Stephen where he was as much a Republican as our Stephen is a Democrat? (I suppose this version would also be a lapsed Catholic.) That is, how would a right-leaning AU!Stephen satirize the two sides?

The GOP doesn't stereotype Liberals as wishy-washy, for example, so AU!Stephen wouldn't create a hippie version. I imagine l!AU!Stephen would be more the hands-off Ivory Tower liberal stereotype. c!AU!Stephen would probably be made to represent the "silent majority:" firmly held beliefs, but too quiet for his own good and easily distracted from serious issues by pop culture.

And for even more fun, add in Libertarian and Socialist/Fascist AU versions of Real Stephen to test the extremes. The only risk there is that they tend to see the two parties as the same (Libertarians see them both as Authoritarians seeking control, Socialists/Facists as too supportive of individuality and internal dissent), so there'd be hardly any distance between the two versions, save for some superficial differences meant for irony.

I enjoy picking Real Stephen's brain (and by extension the brains of his co-writers) even more than his characters, sometimes.

I love how much you're thinking about this :D

One major inaccuracy: r!Colbert isn't a "lapsed" anything. He's an active believer. (The man teaches Sunday school, for crying out loud.)

Would you mind posting the rest of your thoughts a comment to [link] ? That way they can get bounced off of other people who are interested in the meta, not just me. (And I'll argue with you there ^_~)

Oh, I see the problem: I stuck an extra "also" in there. I meant AU Stephen, in addition to being a Republican, would also be a lapsed Catholic, not that he and Real Stephen are both lapsed Catholics. Sorry.

I know Real Stephen is a practicing Catholic. It's why his opposite AU self would be a lapsed one (sorry if I made it unclear which Stephen I was referring to). His co-worker would be TDS host Jon Lebowitz, who doesn't work Saturdays or eat pork, among other things.

IS L!"STEPHEN'S" SWEETNESS A BONG???? Or hookah type thingy maybe... ((forgive me, I haven't had a chance to read the latest stories yet!)) Stephen with the hippie glasses does look a little more Stephen-ish, but I agree it's the wave in the front that really makes him look more like c!"Stephen"... The meeting of alternate universes sketch is GENIUS!!! I especially love the tags hanging off the collars, and all the little mildly surprised eyes ^_^

Yes. Yes, it is. (Albeit a badly drawn one.) :D

I apparently have a serious thing for leashes. Adorable tiny jingling tags and all.

I would love to read a fic with dom!liberal!Stephen.

The leashes are sexy/cute.

I have a friend who is seriously thinking about writing it, so you may be in luck!

Leashes are fun =)
