Dorothy through the ages

Something I noticed during the latest Oz reread: Dorothy does way less in The Wizard of Oz than in any of her later appearances. She barely even talks! I get the feeling she's younger. Like, a lot younger.

So here's little-kid Dorothy in her blue checked dress, just after landing in Oz. Other characters tell her what to do, and she, sweetly and simply, follows directions.

Then Dorothy a few years older, floating in a crate on the Nonestic Ocean in Ozma of Oz. This book, the very first thing she does is make a rescue attempt, which is how she gets swept back into adventure.

And bonus young-adult Dorothy and Ozma, about to engage in some rapturous kissing.

In terms of literature, I think Ruth and Naomi have them beat!

This is really sweet. :D Will you be doing the same for the Scarecrow, Nick Chopper and the Lion?

None of them change appearance at all! What would there be to draw?

Just maybe your versions of them.

I've heard the theory that Dorothy was only around 6 when she first went to Oz, and 11 by the time she moved there permanently. I don't know, though ... if the trip to Australia was to restore Henry's health after the tornado, not too much time should have passed. No matter what her age, she certainly did a lot of growing up between the first and third books! It was her no-nonsense, take charge older version that made me fall in love with her.

That makes sense to me!

Uncle Henry's illness wasn't a direct result of the tornado, it was just "from working so hard." Rebuilding the house after the tornado probably contributed to that, but I can see a few years passing before the stress built up to crisis point, and even another year or two between the Australia trip and the debt collectors going "okay, seriously, final deadline is now."

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. Trying to rebuild your home and maintain the farm at the same time would certainly contribute to the working so hard! And just a few years would make quite a difference for a girl of that age.

I like your idea that Dorothy is like a tiny thing in the first book. Everything happens TO her, not because of her. But she gets older and grows into a person! Doesn't Ozma of Oz start off with her bossing her Uncle Henry around?

Tiny!Dorothy is super cute.

It starts with her thinking he's out on the deck of a ship during a storm, and going after him to bring him in! Big contrast to the first book -- when that storm has the house in the air, she does a lot of sitting quietly on the floor, and when Toto falls through the trap door she doesn't move or react until he sorta...bobs up again.

Lady characters showing growth WAY back when in literature. There's a reason I love the series.

Thanks for making art of this underappreciated series :)
