Description
I'm a little disappointed in this series, I have to say. I went in expecting a laugh about all of these. save maybe Ryan and Ben. Instead, I just...I can't. The comparisons, I suppose, are a little laugh worthy in the sense that the characters themselves are so opposite of what they used to be, but the designs? Well, all the designs actually turned out really well! I'm shocked! I apparently knew what I was doing in 2007, I guess.
In any case, this is the last of this group, the leader of both covens, Robert North. I'm not sure why I saved him for last, but I did.
The first version of Robert was supposed to be the contemporary of Jack Hart, the leader of the New York coven. North was the head honcho of the Chicago coven (and the main reason why I always had the Norths come from there before going to New Haven). North actually was the reason why Ben ran away in that version, and he wanted Ben back because he knew his secret. Unfortunately, I never came up with that secret - I was entertaining the idea that North was also a werewolf somehow, and while that's interesting, it wouldn't have worked with the world, I don't think. The other reason was because he was going insane, but that was evident. Jack let his people do whatever so long as they answer whenever he called. North, by contrast, kept everyone on a short leash, and got twitchy if someone strayed too far away. He was very overhearing and paranoid, but none of the vampires under his rein really questioned it.
The current Robert is pretty much the opposite, naturally. He doesn't want to be head of the coven, it's just that everyone else does. He was constantly trying to hoist the job to John, the former vampire king, but John would just laugh and point out that he's the husband of Robert's younger sister, thus making him under Robert. At the moment, he's de facto leader because he's the oldest. He's a huge nerd, which helps him blend in with humans easier. He's the one who was voted to take care of Benjamin when they decided they needed to protect him, which he's enjoyed immensely. (He really loves kids.) Thanks to the fortune he's amassed, he's always up on the latest technology, which he claims is to help with his business. The truth is he's always been fascinated with the advancements of humans.
Robert is one of the ones who's changed a lot in appearance. But then again, he wouldn't a nerd with greying hair and a grey goatee.
(I mean, I suppose he could, but...). The first Robert was turned when he was older, whereas the current Robert simply looks the oldest of the coven, looking like he's in his mid-thirties. He also doesn't have an awesome evil trenchcoat.
Instead, he just gets a normal button-down-under-a-sweater. It works for him, methinks.
I wasn't going to include the glasses, since they're not a part of his basic appearance, unlike Benjamin, but...I can sort of see him rocking them even when he's not around humans because he likes them. Makes him look nerdier (and more human) than he would normally.
Overall, not a bad ending picture...

Aww, this is the last one? Boo. I suppose there were only so many original characters (and Grigoriy's physical change was drastic, but...personality-wise, basically the same!), and the other characters usually didn't change too much from their NaNo designs to make a comparison worth doing but...boo.
I have to admit though, the humour in this comes from Robert's personality change more than the physical. Old Robert was an insane, but still terrifying, little dictator of his coven, and Old Robert's design looks what you'd expect a terrifying dictator to look like. Also kinda snappy, what with that suit he's got going on. The red eyes are kind of a giveaway that not everything's right in his head, but his design just doesn't look funny like Thomas' did. (The piercings seem a little mismatched with the businessman look he's got going on, but that could just be me. The earrings thing seems to be a hallmark of the North coven though, so I can't really knock it.) If anything, it looks fine once I see it in your current style.
Of course, it's still funny because Robert and Thomas were probably the most drastic changes, but the design itself is pretty solid! I know older designs can seem kinda wonky, especially in comparison to now, but sometimes not. (And to be fair, I think a lot of the funny designs came a bit earlier than 2008.)
I have to laugh at how desperately current Robert did not want the job of coven leader. I guess that means he's the most qualified person -- you know, the whole "people who don't seek power are usually the ones who are most fit to have it," sort of trope. It's a very common one, and Robert sounds like he exemplifies it. It's too bad that everyone else can see how insanely good he is at it, so he gets the job whether he wants it or not. (Although I now have a headcanon of John just not wanting the work -- he's been a king and had his rule. He doesn't need to do it twice; retirement's the time where he can kick his feet up and relax, after all. Let Robert handle it. He knows he won't screw up. I can picture John thinking of several creative ways to get out of work in general, let alone the work of ruling the coven.
) But considering Robert's got his own little business and some sweet tech (and the ability to live among the humans!!) well...he's well off, and I bet he doesn't really mind running the coven that much, not when he sounds like he's right where he wants to be. Aside from the whole 'being hunted' bit.
I really like his design. It's funny because it's a pretty simple design, but somehow it works on him, and gives him the appropriate nerdy look. Especially the glasses. I like the image of him wearing them even when he doesn't need to, just because he likes them. That sounds like the sort of dorky thing he'd do. And...I can't laugh because, like Ben, he looks really good with them, even if he doesn't need them. You'd think it would look a little odd since he didn't wear them consistently before, but...no, he looks great! I'm shocked. He looks pretty handsome, in a nerdy way!
I don't think I could say the same of the original version.
Love seeing where characters came from compared to now, and love the comparison picture!
