Description
I think the problem with redoing series is that I don’t really do that many original pictures anymore. I just do a bunch of redraws. Which I suppose makes sense. I mean, I have these pieces of art that I like the concept of, but they’re old, outdated, or just plain ugly. Plus, it allows me to put out more art, because I don’t have to think about them as much. I guess.
In any case, even though this one is a bit of a spoiler, I felt I should do it anyway. Mostly because for this version, it’s not a spoiler that Solene Vance is, in fact, an alien. This is something I drew out a little later the first time around, with the idea of Kay embracing her Aeolian heritage after discovering here. Here, I drew it now just because it’s so stinking cute.
Well, I may have also drawn it because I still like her Aeolian dress. I mean, it’s sort of funny, because Aeolian culture is based off Greek culture, and that dress looks nothing like a Grecian dress, BUT THAT’S OKAY. BECAUSE IT’S CUTE. I guess it’s okay, at least.
I like the posing in this one. Kay looks more like she’s showing it off. This is also the first time I’ve drawn how Zephyrus looks now. His people are no longer winged cats, but just…cat cats that can talk, and are a little different somehow. But I thought it’d be cute to give him wing ‘spot’s instead. For reasons. Didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted, but…yeah…
And no, Solene doesn’t randomly get to keep her wings. She lost them in an accident when she was younger, BUT I figured the Aeolians are advanced enough to have intergalactic space travel, so wouldn’t they have realistic prosthetics? (I got the idea from the end of Jupiter Ascending, actually.) She gave them up for a bit when she was living on Earth so that she could pass as a human, but she puts them back on again when she returns. Because I’m sure that she felt weird without them, even for the length of time she didn’t have them.
I also decided to make hers varied, with the idea that Aeolians always have white or black wings, so those with fake wings like to change it up a bit, because that’s about the only way they can. It’s also a way to differentiate, and to show the wings are fake compared to the real ones.
Just a fun little random redraw. ![]()

Haha yeah, I guess Kay's Aeolian dress doesn't really look Grecian (actually between the criss-cross front and the belt, it reminds me a little of Japanese fashion -- just a little!), since it's a bit too...structured for that, but it is pretty. I can't blame you for keeping the design even if it doesn't quite 'fit'. (And besides, they don't have to be strictly Grecian...it is an alien culture, it could be something like the nobility wears more 'traditional' Grecian dresses because reasons, while the average Joes of the world just wear something that sort of...evolved from those older garments. I'm saying that mostly because that's a trope I really like so it's the first reason that pops into my head.
The brown wings are really interesting to think about, but it makes sense if you think of them as prosthetic (functional ones, at that!) I've seen people get brightly coloured artificial limbs just because that's what they wanted; why not wings as well? (Although given what you said about that being the only real way to 'change' wing appearance, I'm getting the image of like, Aeolians not dying their hair, but dying their wings different shades. I imagine that'd take a lot of dye o.o) I think it helps that the colour suits Solène nicely as well, since she's pale enough she can pull it off. It's funny, I liked her hair when it was braided (in the old version), but I like it down just as much, especially with that tiara. That gives her a very noble look, but it's not over the top.
Zephyrus not having wings makes me a little sad, but I'm sure he's different enough as it is. >.> Maybe externally they look like cats but internally they're way different or something. It works! Just so long as he's still his usual self, and I have a feeling that's not going to change.
This is a really cute picture, and it just makes me look forward to reading Earthia again.
