Benjamin Comparison

Description

That awkward moment when you were planning on making fun out an outfit, only to discover it...actually looks pretty descent?

So I figured the next comparison I'd do would be another safe one.  Benjamin has changed so little that his hair's even still the same color!  I suppose I just never felt the need to darker in over the nearly eight years since I created him.  :shrug:  Admittedly, he didn't get changed that much, because what he had going on more or less worked.  Sure, his eyes got lighter, and his hair wavier, but really, the biggest change to his appearance is merely style change.

Of course, most of his change isn't cosmetic.

The first version of Benjamin, the one sporting the nice orange shirt (what), was a runaway vampire who hide in a ten-year-old girl's bedroom for about nine years or so, naturally developing feelings for her as she got older.  He was created back when all my guys were basically cynical assholes, although he had reason to be.  When Ryan found him, he was actually just as goth as Thomas was, very stereotypical vampire.  It was just that, unlike Thomas, he never embraced the lifestyle, and once it got too much for him, he ran away from it, hoping to find something better.  And he found Ryan.

Current Benjamin, by contrast, is pretty much a normal sixteen year old guy...who happens to be a vampire.  He's still cynical about life, but he still has reason - he grew up seeing his family only one weekend a month, being raised by his uncle, and oh, they're being hunted because his oldest brother can't handle not being an only child.  So that means that, if he were to be discovered, well, that's just be crazy bad.  And to make matters worse, he can't tell the one person he cares about the most what he is, because he needs to remain hidden from the world.  But he does have a fun side, and he enjoys life a lot more now...

I could have sworn that shirt would look horrible on him, but it just looks like a normal shirt.  I mentioned in his design that Ryan got that for him for whatever reason (at the time, we didn't know where the story was set), and I can see it as being just a shirt he pulls on every now and then.  I also love looking at his old designs, and seeing all his piercings.  It's a weird thing, but I thought it was neat that, sure, he has this normal appearance, but he still has pieces of his old self he holds onto, for whatever reason.

Current Benjamin is going to be more stylish than his previous versions, mostly because he's actually a modern boy who pays attention to the current trends.  Sure, he's actually more of a teeshirt sort of guy, but he can dress up at times.  Those glasses still crack me up, and I'm still surprised that they look so good on him!  A vampire with glasses.  Almost as bad a vampire with freckles!

I'm still very pleasantly surprised with how old Benjamin turned out.  In my old style, he looks...funny.  In my current style, he doesn't look half bad.  ^^;

I think it’s kinda funny that while all of the others changed drastically, both in appearance and personality, just Ben’s personality changed. He’s changed (physically) remarkably little, and what has changed are mostly minor things. I suppose if his design is already perfect, there’s no need to change it. >.>

The ‘New York’ shirt doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would, either! I thought that it being such a bright colour against his pale skin, it would look…odd (because I didn’t think skin that pale could pull off bright colours), but it looks surprisingly good. It’s funny how all the little things (straight hair, the shirt instead of a button-down) give Ben’s old design a slightly different vibe than he has now. I mean, of course he does; he’s a different person compared to now, but it’s just…I don’t know, I can’t quite explain it. A few little tweaks makes Ben’s design (the current one) look just…different somehow, but I like it. :D

Haha, old Ben’s piercings and stuff don’t really seem wild/radical to me now, mostly because a lot of Purebred characters already have multiple piercings, but I suppose that is a lot of piercings for your characters at the time, to say nothing of Purebred characters now. (I think it’s a shame that no pictures of goth Ben exist from the HI, but that wasn’t a central part of his character, even back then. I just think it’d be amusing. ;P)

I still love the outfit combo Ben has gong on here! I actually startled myself earlier today when I came across an older chibi I’d drawn…the outfit is semi-close to what he has now, and even though I know it was coincidence (and certainly not the first time he’d been drawn in a button-down with his jacket), it threw me for a loop. :XD: I think this is just proof that the brown/blue combo works really well, not that we had any doubt about that.

I think what I’m excited about, art-wise, is seeing Ben in a variety of outfits/being more fashion-forward. That’ll be an interesting change, but judging by his outfit here…it’ll look good on him. >.>

Even though he might’ve not changed much physically, personality-wise he’s changed in leaps and bounds, and this latest change (making him actually Ryan's age) sounds like it’ll be an interesting twist on his character. I look forward to reading it in July. :D It’s so great to see Ben’s beginnings to now — love the picture!
