So what do you think? Hint: It's located in Switzerland. ;)

Art and science contradict each other? They probably do. :D Yet here are some features I collected in the past couple of weeks:

Haha when I saw it I knew it was a particle collider. Then I was trying to remember where it was (which I knew it was in Switzerland) and I didn't remember the name. Then I saw the first comment... Gosh what a party-pooper! lol
ErikShoemaker's avatar
haha indeed he is :D
To be honest I wouldn't have recognized this thing myself probably. I may have guessed it, but yea it could have been anywhere. o.o There are lots of colliders around the world, the LHC in Switzerland is probably just the most popular out there.

I know, right! Well I had just seen some pictures of it on Yahoo News a few weeks before that. And I literally have no idea how many colliders are in the world... Why am I thinking only a few dozen?

So.. any person can just go and see it??
The door is open and you can just walk in.... :iconatnightplz:
What are you suppose to do there?:icontrippyguyplz:

I have the opportunity to go there because the department of physics at my university organised a trip. It's just sight-seeing. ;)

I guess it's open to visitors because they also have a hostel. You should check the Cern homepage for information about that.

Oh...I'm checking out what this is...it has something to do with particles or something...

Hey...I've seen this before....South Park...Imaginationland... have you seen it?...
I'm not making it up. They actually made like a couple of episodes of this machine. It's suppose to be a gate way to another dimension... Imaginationland.. LOL!:iconfoxgigglesplz:

lol nah I don't watch south park, sounds funny though.

Actually it's a large hadron collider. They throw particles with high energies and speedness at each other and analyze their reactions and fission products. They are looking for a very special particle called the "Higgs" which has not even been proven to exist yet.

What I want to know is, what they're trying to achieve with it..
also I heard they're going to close it down soon...
ErikShoemaker's avatar
noo not at all. It will be active until 2013 which is about the time they will need to find the Higgs particle. The discovery of the Higgs particle is essential for further research in this field, I'm afraid I can't really explain this in detail to you :XD:
I'm back from my trip and I can tell you that there are places which are open to visitors; but to get access to the main areas you'll have to be in contact with any important people over there.
Unfortunately the collider was active during my visit so I had no chance to actually see it because I would have been destroyed by energy and radiation :(

Ok, Thanks.
To bad that you couldn't see it..:iconcoolface-kingplz:.

Awesome! The LHC? I gotta say I'm completely jealous - for me, that would be like a pilgrimage ;P so take lots of pictures!! and share them! :D
ErikShoemaker's avatar
hehe I'll sure do ;) I'm actually surprised how many people are interested in this thing because my parents were like "ewww what's so interesting about it" when I told them :D
Regulus36's avatar
Lol, i guess your parents aren't science nerds :nerd: I just think it's amazing
ErikShoemaker's avatar
no they certainly aren't :D

Sieht aus wie ein Spaceshuttle oder ein riesiger Generator - aber nee, ich hab keine Ahnung was es eigentlich ist xD;
ErikShoemaker's avatar
ist ein teil des Large Hadron Colliders im Cern in der Schweiz, aber welcher Teil genau weiß ich auch nicht^^ werde es hoffentlich am Freitag erfahren. :)
underthisbluesky's avatar
Sieht auf jeden Fall interessant aus ^^
