Road to Barlangis by ErikShoemaker Road to Barlangis by ErikShoemaker
EDIT: I updated the colors of this work and changed a few details to include it in my calendar. You can find the old version here: img03.deviantart.net/d75e/i/20…

Created for CGSociety's Digital Matte Painting Challenge of October "Barlangis". My entry didn't place, but the competition was fun anyway, and the brief was very inspiring:

"Barlangis can be reached in two ways: From the East coming by train or the West after hiking through 2 days of darkness.
The first thing becoming visible once your eyes finally get adjusted to the distant spotlights are the enormous metallic structures rising out of the solid mountain walls, ceiling and ground. The dark, cold industrial shapes seem out of place in their earthy environment. Faded and worn down by humidity and hard labour.
Whether Barlangis is unfinished or has been demolished is hard to tell if one does not know its past.
Travelers might question the mysterious bond between man and nature but soon come to understand the necessity of their connection.
Only after spending enough time underground can one truly understand the meaning of sunlight and begin to miss the stars.
For the inhabitants of these complex labyrinth of poles and strings a seemingly never ending shift work pattern, in order to secure the very existence of their home, is just as much part of their everyday life as the daily mental recreation in-front of the television, enjoying one of the endless amount of available channels offered to Barlangis' citizens."

Really like the subtle dragon guarding the way. The cascading water and dark cloudy sky really add to a very supernatural feel. THe city also contrasts nicely with the general feel of the work: all futurisistic and looking like a sci-fi movie set. The rough stone on the far side of the bridge give it a darker and more foreboding feel, and the rickety bridge design adds to the feel. However the obvious light from no source shining onto the city gives a feel as if, once gettting through the dark, yuo have suddenly arrived at a place of light, a speck of paradise-like, patch of heaven, welcoming with open arms future city.
The main critique I can give is that the colors seem very mono- or duo chromatic. Color may not be important to the overall of the piece, but a splash of unexpected color would draw the viewer's eye to something in particular.

If I had to enlist all the thing that are great and all the thing that are bad, I would spent half an hour praising you, and less than a minute giving you critiques, but I'm going to be unfair to you and only skip to the bad parts because I hope you'll have more value from this approach. You're obviously already good artist.
I have 2 thing to highlight:
1) the theme of this picture-you chose the most boring subject. You still made it look great, but this is kind of places that if existed I would never visit. Dragon in closer view would make things just better, if you needed to stick with the other parts. Perhaps sleeping one.
2) When you zoom in to part of the picture on the middle left side, where you see a lighter part through that stone arch, it should not be that light. Just the 25-30 percent darker, but I told you-you're great skilled and this is what I choose to nitpick with you.
Overall, awesome skills.

Wonderful matte painting with a soft cinematic tone to it. It actually reminds me of the near end scenes at the dam from 'Edge of tomorrow' if you've seen it.

it is a cool movie indeed! I don't remember those scenes exactly, but I know it was visually quite epic, so that is definitely a compliment for me.  :D
Glad you like it! I was absolutely going for that cinematic feel, glad it is working. :)
