Goblet of Giants by ErikShoemaker Goblet of Giants by ErikShoemaker
Yet another anime-inspired matte painting. (-: This scene is a landscape brought to life from "Made in Abyss", which aired just a few weeks ago (thanks a bunch to xLocky for the recommendation!). The anime follows the story of two kids descending down a strange pit in search for the protagonist's mother, who is supposedly somewhere at the bottom of the "Abyss" several thousand meters below the ground. The pit has several layers of beautiful surreal landscapes, where the "Goblet of Giants" is one of them further down the road consisting of these cup-shaped giant mushrooms. During their growth the goblets are filled with acid and only once the goblets reach full growth the fluids will turn into steaming hot water pools.

Besides painted elements the scene contains photos from beta.mattepaint.com/gallery/ & visualhunt.com. Thanks also to
Null-Entity, madetobeunique, YBsilon-Stock and Selficide-Stock for the DA-stock!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hey... where did you get that picture of me?

Every day, I sit out there... when I've had enough, I'd walk back across the water to my cabin...

Damn... that is really breath taking <3 <3 <3

Frightening? Nah, I've a big dragon affinity... tattoos to prove it.

Though, I'd like to say that I wouldn't be frightened... however, I am a realist and would never know until the actual sight has been seen XD

And you're welcome :3

Beatiful scene! Nod  Personally im attracted by the epical work on sky, with roots, dragons...and its well visible your effort to compose them with a sense in the scene like some  clinging on some root and some other flying. But the most giant work is on the clouds.....well i know 1 thing for sure.....the work with clouds is like walking in the Sahara desert....Really a pain. So i imagine the work here. I mean you didn't apply them random....because they are too importants. So each single touch to apply them was important here. Should been interesting also see some dragon swimming underwater on that pool :horny: probably to simulate this scene was necessary use some good whale or dolphin or similar.

Actually I thought the clouds were the easier part in this. :D applying the tree roots and making everything look realistic with the right depth and distance was by far the most annoying and tedious part. Again I have an animation for this :D although it doesn't really show the work that was involved because it is only a single step for each tree. cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/i…
You can consider one full day of work for each of those "trees/goblets" :faint:

About clouds i wrote that because with my mouse i know how it is difficult.....but i explain better..
when i wrote about clouds at the same time i was talking also about the enviromental haze....so in few words i was talking about your great work to simulate the distance/depth......for this reason i wrote "long hard work expecially on the background/sky"...... The part really delicate of the entire work, because if you fail it in this specific work, it would been a flat work.
Of course i know you couldn't create a long movie about the wip......:D but it describe perfectly the global work! but in anycase animation or not, i know always the value of a work like for example this specific case. :work: revamp

haha, apparently it's actually a dangerous place, but I've heard that a lot! Thanks a lot for the compliment, Dan. Among my recent works it was probably the most time consuming so I guess the extra effort was worth it. To be honest, I wouldn't have started if I had known in advance how much time the detailing would take. :D
