But, but... a boat made from stone, isn't that impossible? ;-)

Technical Details

This image has been rendered using the POVRay raytracer.

Note: No post-processing has taken place on the image to make the illusion work; this is the 3D scene as it is rendered by the raytracer.

Heh heh. The bottom guy with the drink is on the same level as the guy above him. :D And yet, he's not too.

Yes, impossible figures resemble time travel a bit. Both can lead to confusing contradictions. :-)

Seasick? No, this boat is steady as a rock.

Nicely done. You masked the illusion very cleverly without damaging it. And...I don't know if a stone boat is impossible, but that one certainly is.

It is not very obvious, but the boat is based on an impossible (Penrose) triangle. You can see this by comparing the back and front of the boat. At the back the boat is two cubes wide and only one cube tall, whereas in the front the boat is one cube wide and two and a half cube high. So climbing the stairs (only one level) is sufficient to reach the steering wheel, which is two-and-a-half levels above sea level, which shouldn't be possible.

Do you see what I mean?

Ik kan het nog steeds niet zien, het is nogal ingewikkeld. Maar dankje voor het proberen om het uit te leggen :)

:woohoo: Another fun & amazing masterwork. Conceptually brilliant.... that stone boat....Myst?... or [link] ?
Rather reminds me of this (non-rock)one of mine [link] with its' Lilliputian crew.

:w00t:  :winner:

Thanks! I hadn't seen the picture of the stone boat before, but that's neat. So although I came up with the idea by myself, it wasn't entirely original so it seems. Doesn't matter though. By the way, it wasn't actually meant to be a boat from the outset. Only after I placed it on a reflective surface (which seemed like a fun thing to do) did the idea come to me. Until then it was just an arbitrary structure without a purpose.

Should your Lilliputian crew of the SS Silverbot City ever be bored with their jobs, maybe they can take part in an exchange with my little green Rock The Boat sailors to just swap jobs for a while! ;-)

Actually, try Googling stone ship & then switch to Image mode & you'll see refs that show stone ships go way back to our earliest stone circles & such, fascinating!
I think my bots would have moisture probs in their circuitry if they manned yr boat, they are spacebots.

Very nice. Took me a while to spot it, but that's probably because I'm tired :P Might be an idea to us the place where the three walls come together as an actual corner (Having a little character lean against one of the walls) Making an optical illusion 'in 3D' must be a bit of a pain.

Also, Dutch flag, huzzah.

Thanks for the comment. You may believe it or not, but my very first sketch for this scene actually had a character sitting in the center corner and it was also initially placed there in the 3D model. I dediced to remove it though because it looked a bit too crowded. The suggestion of the corner is now a bit more subtle, the textures of the surfaces match up in there.

Yeah, making an impossible 3D scene is a bit of a challenge, but an interesting one. :-)

Well, the Dutch are historically a nation of sailors and still are, so it seems natural for the boat to sail under that flag. Oh, and then there's that thing that I'm Dutch myself... :-)
