This is the spacescape from the latest spaceship submission ;p Bit beefed up because the ship was hiding a lot of parts so i had to make them new...

I sometimes forget just how beautiful the world can be. From space one may see lights from cities but that doesn't really change the fact that given the right mindset an artist can make the world and it's tech look truly breathtaking.

Yeah, its really quite amazing how much the human race has changed the looks of the planet just through its monumental cities. Just think about this, if you know where france is, that entire huge blob of light is paris. A single city of a single nation (and its telling that germany, france and the BeNeLux states are about the brightest spots in europe, i even had to clip them down a bit so that they are not an entire glowing blob of light...).

Makes you realize how tiny a planet is, if a single species can change its appearance in that way in just 100 years (100 years ago you'd not have seen a single decently bright light at all). I wonder how the light map will look in another 50 ^^

if nothing really random happens, probably more densely packed lights over larger sprawls and a couple hundred lights on the moon. I doubt we'll have mars fully colonized in 50 years. but ya i wasn't too surprised when i saw Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, DC. but when i saw Europe i quite nearly shit bricks.

Yeah, sadly the resolution of this submission clips a lot of light-data, the map is about 8 times as high resolution as this submission

But i can tell you, my computer grinds to a halt having to cope with 4 different 16200x8100 pixel textures

oh wow. almost wish i could see that version but based on my computer's stats i'd probably end up with a fire. still is a gorgeous pic though. even though it hits my nostalgia center as far as space is concerned and that's always good once in a while. still can't wait to see what you make next.

Well, to be really honest, i don't know either what i make next ;) But i just stumbled upon crazybump (nice application ,p) which i think is really cool.. this will probably make room for another outdoor medieval scenery but this time a street corner or dark alley or something alike.

Reason being i now can create decently working specular and displacement maps from my photograph texture archives - and i just learned how to make pretty much any texture fully tile able - not automated but ok ;p

I have the planet rendered in 2560x .. but that kind of res requires some kind of.. serious effort to produce a final image with, might make a wallpaper of it after all... - Atm i just have the planet done.. which sadly only fills 30% of the wallpaper... ^^

I don't think my computer will run that very well. Is it better than Freelancer Discovery Reunion?

Not really, freelancer is more shooterish whereas X³ is more a space economy and battle sim.. more economy than battle (so you can build factories and space stations etc. and command carriers up to fleet level +100 ships)

I did read some user reviews on Gamespot and there was a huge gap in opinions. Some gave it 10, some gave it 1.0. I guess there is a new patch that fixed a lot of problems. I just have an old P4 2.4gHz machine, so Discovery is probably more of an option for me.

Normally, if I feel like thinking and doing strategy/space stuff...I'll load up Galactic Civilization 2 Gold. It's like Civilization in space which is turn based and you can build your custom ships. Perhaps when I build a new computer I will check this out pending a real Gamespot review. :XD:

Yeah ^^

Could have made up a procedural light map too.. but Nasa data is free (more or less) and it looks nice (although its massively edited via colorizer.

Aside that, is intentional ;p

Great pic

How much sphere got the earth ?
1 Land 1 Clouds 1 Atmosphere?
And the city lights.. is it luminosity map?

Yes - 3 spheres and luminosity with a lumas + gradient trick to darken it in bright places (though i have a reason why i don't show more of the surface ;p) Also several volume lights to enhance the transition between clouds/surface/athmo

I haven't yet found why the lights are sometimes visible in bright areas.. they shouldn't do that!
