faith in the world below by equivoque faith in the world below by equivoque
this is from a scan of a print, which i subsequently cropped and to which i made a few brightness/contrast adjustments... but not as many as you might imagine. the strange color is a result of the inexpensive off brand film i bought at a convenience store combined with the effects of my (old) trashy scanner.

the north shore of lake superior, minnesota

edit: cleaned the dust off the original scan to re-upload for new print.

It's an interesting shot, and I can understand the moment (and the fact that there's no way you could have gotten the gulls to pose for you), but overall it is a bit weak. For one, there are basically 3 groupings of gulls here, and 2 run off the edges while the last faces off the edge, which takes your eyes right off of the picture! Also, pictures where the content is all around the edges and the middle is empty are generally not the greatest (though there are acceptions). You mentioned that you cropped it, so perhaps there is more potential here with some proper attention. From just this piece here, my advice would be to focus on the grouping of gulls on the far right side of the image, since they face into the picture and have as much sky as possible around them without the other gulls. With them facing and flying into the image and the other gulls not there to distract it would pull the eye in and be much more powerful.

I have seen other cropped gulls[link]
sometimes it works - and with over 300 faves it is obviously compelling-and with all the uncropped gull fotos out there maybe it is this very radical crop that makes it special :)

There is that balance between something unique and trying to fit all the other elements in. I only like to critique when I critique. You're always welcome to take it or leave it and I won't love you any less for it.

Fantastic! Top five of all of your work. It's a pretty basic image and over done to say the least. But it has your style, and that's what makes it diffrent.

I also have an obsession with lucid things.

Somebody said it looked kind of like an old italian painting. That's what I mean when I say airbrushed. If they'd had airbrushes back then. Some of the neatest photos I've seen done have been with bad flim or expired film, or something of that sort.
