I suspect that's exactly why they never tried to really explain it. No matter what you say, there's no way you can explain without effectively resorting to either an something that everyone knows makes no sense or going 'it's magic, I don't have to explain it'. Of course they easily could have changed it to Shepard being horribly injured or trapped in a device and they needed two years to get Shepard out so the writers still messed it up.
