Bottle Mail Ltd- Sending your message in a bottle by Entangled-Minds Bottle Mail Ltd- Sending your message in a bottle by Entangled-Minds
This scene was created in Blender 2.62, rendered in cycles and then I used photoshop for post-processing. I actually created the bottle for a different project and decided to make a separate simple scene using it. It also allowed me to play with the great new ocean simulator.

Again, the bump-mapping is probably a little too much.

Really nice!! Maybe the water looks just a bit dense, but the bottle and the atmosphere is fantastic!!

Very, very, very cool. Absolutely love it :squee: The reflections are great; did you use an HDR image for environment texture?

Cheers! I combined and played with a few sky images for the environment map but I don't think they were HDR images.

I think the bottle looks great and realistic enough. The coarse texture in the glass only makes it look old, which I think fits perfectly for the scene. I'd only like to see the ocean go farther to the horizon because now it seems to end right behind the bottle. Also, some minor tweaking in the water texture might be in place.

But nonetheless it's a really cool looking scene! :ahoy:

Thanks! :) Yes, I thought that the ocean seemed to end abruptly too. It actually goes a long way back but because I put the camera so closer to the surface a big wave obscured it. You only see a tiny bit of the actual horizon at the far left. I probably should have tried out more wave setups or raised the camera up slightly.

Thanks! You definitely should have a go with Blender. It's a great free program. It can take some time to learn all of the details but there are loads of brilliant tutorials. Once you know it you can then do pretty much anything you can in extremely expensive programs like Maya or 3DS Max.

:ashamed: A daft question of the month - how resources-hungry is Blender? (I'm asking this because I have a pile of rubbish that likes to think it is a computer but it's in fact an oversized abacus with a couple of fans and a power supply :ashamed:.)

It really depends on how complex the scene is. It doesn't use much processing power at all by itself. I have used it a few times on a small netbook without too much trouble. For very detailed scenes it may struggle though. Rendering the scene will also take much longer on an abacus but it should get there.

The bottle is rendered greatly, it's hard to believe Cycles has done the job! The only thing I'd fix is the ocean - the surface is too wrinkled and also the texture should be fixed - it looks too much like ink, it is kinda too thick, sticky and dense.

Thank you :) I added a wave displacement from dynamic paint to the ocean surface to try to give some feedback from the bottle. That's probably contributing to some of those smaller waves/wrinkles. I probably didn't actually need it.

Cool! creative render, catching motive! This has potential to become a classic. The cork texture is not good though.

Thanks! :) Yes, I rushed the cork and it was always too dark to notice how bad it actually was in my preview renders.
