This staircase was designed by renowned architect Victor Horta, often present as the father of Art nouveau, relatively short-lived artistic movement that marked the transition between the 19th century and the 20th century.

It is located in the centre of the Horta House in Brussels, and is listed in the Unesco World Heritage insofar as it expresses perfectly the influence of the Art Nouveau style, and the turning point in the architecture in the early 20th century.

The inlaid portrait is that of Anne-Marie Chassaigne, known as Liane de Pougy, Madame Henri Pourpe and then, by his second marriage, Princess Georges Ghika, who was a dancer and courtesan of the Belle Epoque, here photographed by Nadar.
