Anxiety and Depression are like a black hole. Once you cross the event horizon, you are pulled spiraling downwards. It is difficult to escape, but unlike a black hole it is not impossible.
I chose this version of the Star Trek Logo for my first tattoo because this is what it represents to me:
The Black Circle represents the black hole of anxiety & depression. It is of the Chimp in our psychological nature. The chimp of our psyche is 5 times stronger than our human part (or Vulcan depending on how you look at it). This represents the grip and pull of the gravity well of fear, which one needs to resist in order to stay on top of things!
The shield emblem represents a barrier of courage, determination, integrity, strength (among many other positive characteristics that the logo represents, but these are the ones I am focusing on by this particular rendition).
The shield barrier is deliberately positioned just in front of the event horizon (the point of no return), acting to protect from entering and being pulled into the black hole. It sits defiantly above the singularity. The qualities of courage, strength, determination are that shield, but by focusing on those qualities, they can also help lift you out of the black hole (should you have already crossed the event horizon) and turn things around into a positive direction of growth.
A reminder for me to never quit. Rest if you must, but never quit, and to face everyday and every challenge with boldness and courage. The only way to deal with fear and anxiety is "through". Anxiety is an illusion, the reality is never as bad, and 90% of that which we worry about doesn't happen. It is all what if!
Boldy Go! and tell the Chimp of Doubt inside your head (The Chimp Paradox by Prof Steve Peters) to get lost!
