For a long time I've been trying to find something in my life that I can get really immersed in.  Something that contributes to a sense of self, something to take pride in.  Without that I have felt directionless for years. I consider myself an artistic person, but I often feel like I don't yet have the skill, or the portfolio of work, to really call myself an artist.  Maybe more of a dabbler - which is ok.  Except that for me, dabbling results in only the smallest improvements, and a lack of a collection of completed work to feel proud of. It's been a bit of a rough year so far.  Things are likely to get worse soon (illness in the family), and then hopefully will start getting better. I am still waiting on surgery, since it was postponed.  I have found myself saying a few times how this illness has dominated my year.  Well, it's true that it has held me back from the physical activity I've wanted to do.  Those plans are going to have to wait until after recovery.  But I have decided that I'm going to try to make sure that these months of waiting for surgery haven't been a waste.  I have been reading a lot (as always), doing my lessons to learn a 2nd language online, taking som

Calligraphy

I recently received a starter calligraphy kit.  It is a dip pen with 5 nibs, black, red and gold inks, paper and a small instruction booklet.  I ordered a more thorough instructional book as well.  So far it has been challenging, but I am learning bits and pieces as I go.  It has so far been a meditative activity that requires gentle attention and focus. I think I've been drawn towards trying it for a few reasons.  One of them was reading the post-apocalypse novel A Canticle for Leibowitz.  The image of the monk (I think it was brother Francis) re-creating the document with extreme care and reverence struck a chord.  An interest in language
