Ramphorynchus sp. by EmperorDinobot Ramphorynchus sp. by EmperorDinobot
Just a ramphorynchus. It's a particularly under (over) rated animal. It's very strange, and there's thousands of similar species scattered all over Europe.

Every other pterosaur is a Rhamphorhynchus, at least in popular media (the others are Pteranodon, then there's that upstart Quetzalcoatlus).

That's what I meant by overrated.

Underrated is that fact that people don't know its name  Ironic isn't it?

Yet it has fewer syllables than Tyrannosaurus. I think it's the Rh, ph, rhy, and ch in there that shove the train of thought off its tracks.

Very nice, how teethy it is!
Um, are rhamphorynchi digitigrade like that? I wouldn't be surprised if they were, it's just I"ve always seen them plantigrade..

I believe most pterosaurs, if not all, were plantigrade. But that doesn't stop them from going on tippy-toes!

I used this: [link]

See how he's about to achieve flight? I did take the plantigradism into consideration, but I thought he'd look more dramatic lifting his rear area higher.

Well in terms of their front limbs, I see some pterosaurs with a long wrist-to-knuckle zone, like a horse, and some with a very short one, like a bat...
but in terms of hind limbs.. I've only ever seen them very short. This picture is interesting, the rhynch definitely has kinda long feet :) and he has those.. hooks in back! Very cool. I lurn'd a thing! :D

Yeah, Mike used to draw them like that, but that isn't how they launched (pterosaurs almost certainly launched quadrupedally). Also, the fifth toe should be incorporated into the uropatagium.

What do you mean? Parallel to the other toes?

Somewhat, then curving back. It would be incorporated into the membrane behind the legs.

Very good drawing! :)

I'm not specialist when it comes to pterosaurs but I think the body is too long.

The body of Ramphorynchus is kind of long compared to later pterosaurs (especially Azdarchids o.o)
