Monolophosaurus jiangi by EmperorDinobot Monolophosaurus jiangi by EmperorDinobot
This crested theropod hails from China. It had a single crest on its head that extended from the frontals to the anterior parts of its skull. No one really knows what it was used for, though...

Enjoy!

do you think monolophosaurus was related to guanlong? i mean, i know guanlong is an early tyrannosaur, but the basic overview is very similar.

Same time and place. They've been looking at the possibilities of Monolophosaurus + Guanlong + Proceratosaurus + Ornitholestes into being the granddaddies of Cretaceous tyrannosaurids.

Personally I think Monolophosaurus, while similar to Guanlong in many things, is still closer to either Allosaurids, the Sinraptorids, Megalosaurs (which is what it's being treated as)+Spinosaurs (Because Spinosaurs + Megalosaurs = Tetanurae)

i see...but when did the tyrannosaurs start to become bulky? i mean, first there's guanlong, and the only other i remember is like nanotyrannus and those subspecies. basically, what's the link that i'm missing? ...or have we found it?

Guanlong lived in the Middle Jurassic, giving tyrannosaurids a lot of time, but tyrannosaurs got really bulky 90 MYA. Tyrannosaurus IS the bulkiest, biggest tyrannosaur.
