Samus by Emortal982 Samus by Emortal982
Took a break from some of the other things I need to get done to pay tribute to super metroid, and the iconic Samus. While Metroid had quite a few outings across numerous nintendo platforms, I still think Super Metroid was the most cohesive piece of work. It was a game from a time where developers didn't feel the need to hold your hand and walk you through every obstacle. They just gave you a set of abilities, and somewhere to start. That made it quite rewarding to figure out how to progress. When they did offer clues as to how to progress, they weren't intrusive or blatant about it. Multiple instances involved the docile animal life navigating the terrain in a way that you could copy. Then, when you weren't trying to figure out how to progress, you were fighting large impressive bosses. Bosses that didn't have large glowing orange bits to basically smack you over the head and say "shoot me here, its where I bleed". No these bosses didn't walk around pointing to their own weaknesses. You simply tried to use the tools and weapons you had to figure out what works. Some also had some neat hidden tricks. Such as the underwater boss. You could easily defeat him in seconds if you let him grab you, and then fire your grappling beam into the electrical current spewing from the destroyed chunks of machinery. Of course, you remember this too, or you would have gotten bored of reading this by now. While I still appreciate the games of today, I think developers need to challenge us the way they used to. The easier these games become, the less rewarding they are to complete.

Then you compare Super Metroid to its "successor" in the timeline (*cough* Other M *cough*) and you realize, "Wow. Nintendo has fallen FAR from that original vision."

So if Nintendo ever remakes Super Metroid (I mean, they remade the first two games in the series; why not this one?), they had BETTER get it right. No hand-holding, just subtle clues. No overly long cutscenes, just subtext. No tutorial slog, just a short piece of text briefly telling you how your upgrades work and how to use them. Samus Returns was close to that, but not close enough for a true Super Metroid remake. Since they'll most likely use the Switch, at least the graphics will probably be good, although I'm a bit worried if they try to do a 3D remake. How would the map translate? What kind of mechanics could be used to simulate the feel of Super Metroid in a 3D world? (Hint: NOT the concept of Other M. They need to use every single one of those 4 directional buttons and 12 lettered buttons in order for it to really work.)

The very vibrancy shows extremely well in this piece of work. Samus just looks ready to kick down some rear quite heavily.
