Major spoiler-warning for you who have not seen the movie or read the book.
So as you probably know I read or rather listen to the Pet Sematary audio-book every October so I know the story pretty well and the movie is one of my favorites.
I found a Swedish version of the audiobook yesterday and begun listening to it. Something hit me reading/listening that never occurred to me before. Now I know Juds age sometimes differ: movie/book/radio-dramatization etc but this is from the sixth print of the Swedish version from 1984 (I checked my hard copy of it to get all the facts, Swedish version so the quotes might not be translated as it is in the book but the facts are the same). Jud was born in the year 1900 so in 1983 he is 83 years old naturally, this is when Louis and family movies in during the summer.
When they are all at the pet cemetery (Jud and the Creeds) Jud tells them he buried his dog Spot up here when he died of old age (we all know the story he later tells Louis, bare with me). Spot died of old age 1914 according to the book (Louis thinks it might have been 1917 when the war begun in Europe, but that´s him trying to make sense of Juds memory later on). Hence Jud was 14 (or 17) years old when Spot died the second time. Spot dies for the first time when getting caught in barbed wire (well Juds dad mercy-kills him but it is the cause of the infection that would kill him anyway). Jud says this happens in 1910 when Jud is 10 years old.
So in the book it is explained a lot better that the place beyond the deadfall has power- it drags you to it like a magnet (hence the electricity- comparison I guess. Wendigo- all that). If you have been there it gets a hold of you and if you go into the Pet Sematary aka near the deadfall it starts to real you in like a fish if you have someone to bury. Jud tells Louis about it and that he did not know why he took Louis up there. Jud also says that his dad knew about the place but had never been there so it cannot get a hold of you if you never been so random people cant be pulled to the deadfall for no reason. Jud basically says you have to be lead there or lead someone there or if you have been once and used it you can go by yourself or lead someone there. (It is also said the power comes and goes). In the conversation with Louis telling him this after they buried Church he says "Stanny B. had been there and he brought me there.....70 years go by and I take...(it should end with "you" he means Louis in the conversation)". Heaverly implied he has only been there once with Stanny B. to bury Spot and then never again until he takes Louis to the place.
Now as they are on their way to the Mic-Mac burying ground to bury Church they are climbing the stairs.
" 42....43....44...." (Louis)
"45" Jud said. "I had forgotten. I have not been up here in 12 years, I think."
Now....all for errors and such in long books it is bound to happen from time to time. But Jud does not always tell the whole truth about...basically anything about the place (mic-mac burial grounds). He does not tell Louis where they are going when Church dies. He says noone have ever buried a person (human) up there with turns out to be an obvious lie (Timmy Baterman). He only gives Louis bits and pieces here and there and is sure the place killed Gage and was darn well aware Louis would eventually bury his son up there. My question is: what the hell did Jud do up there about 12 years ago?
The only time you go there is when you have someone to bury. It is never said you go beyond the deadfall for any other reason and I do not think anyone just takes a stroll since it is explained to be like an alternate reality or other dimension (descriptions in the book) and it only lets you in if it can benefit from it. If you try to climb the dead-fall just because: you´ll fall down and break something. This might be why Steve cant follow Louis when he is off to bury Rachel- cause he has no business there other than to stop Louis.
So again: what did Jud do up there twelve years ago that he does not seem to remember talking to Louis later (thinking it was 70 years since he was there, well actually 73 years if Jud says he was 14 when Spot bit the dust time two.)?
Maybe it is not arthritis Norma has....
I also have two other theories: One: Ellie being a Stephen King psychic-shinning-kid triggers the power of the burial ground. Two: Pascow is the place " Kids will always do what you tell them not to do" so his warnings (now just according to the book he only appears as a ghost once and the incident when he practically dies in Louis arms) are actually the place calling Louis or preparing for all things to be set in motion. Loius cant go there himself until Jud brings him along. Loius actually tries climbing the deadfall after his Pascow-dream and he falls down.
