Cyprian Mythology - Pygmalion and the Statue by EmanuellaKozas Cyprian Mythology - Pygmalion and the Statue by EmanuellaKozas

Drawn as a gift for my grandfather's 92nd Birthday.

MYTHOLOGY
---------------
In Ovid's narrative, Pygmalion was a Cypriot King who carved the perfect woman out of ivory.  He made her nearly lifelike, in the likeness of the Goddess Aphrodite and worshiped his work so much, he fell in love with the statue.
In time, Aphrodite's sacred festival day came, and Pygmalion made offerings at her altar. There, too scared to admit his desire, he quietly wished for a bride who would be "the living likeness of my ivory girl." When he returned home, he kissed his ivory statue, and found that its lips felt warm. He kissed it again, and found that the ivory had lost its hardness. The Goddess had granted Pygmalion's wish.
Pygmalion married the ivory sculpture changed to a woman under Aphrodite's blessing. In Ovid's narrative, they had a daughter, Paphos, from whom the city's name is derived.
In some versions Paphos was a son, and they also had a daughter, Metharme.

That's such a cute story. At first I was confused by the pic bc, well, the girl was as stiff as a statue! It looked so awkward. Then I realized that the tiny pink shawl was in fact not a tiny pink shawl but Aphrodite's magic in effect and the ivory girl was mid change. Must've been weird tho to suddenly be alive and some dude is kissing you. Or was she aware of who he was? Hmmm...

The tiny details in the background are lovely. I mostly love their hair though- so beautiful! (may or may not have a weakness for pretty hair *shifty eyes*)

*cough* Your art is just getting better and better! Great work!

It's the original of that story. The sculptor was also Pygmalion in that one, but the first accounts of Pygmalion and the statue say he was a King who fell in love with an ivory statue. Galatea was a name given to her in more recent times. In Ovid's ancient text the statue is not named. ;)
