Description
This needs a little bit of explanation. As a kid, I was super into Brian Jacques's Redwall books. Perhaps you've heard of them, or maybe watched the PBS Kids TV show they were adapted into. The gist of it is that you have this abbey of peaceful mice and other woodland creatures who have to fend off invasions of evil rats, weasels, and whatever-have-you. Most of the animals in the books are native to Jacques's homeland of Britain, but there are a couple of exceptions. In the fifth book, Salamandastron, we meet Deepcoiler, a massive water snake much bigger than any real British snake. It's ambiguous how large the characters in Redwall are supposed to be, but Deepcoiler is indisputably gigantic. Later, in the twelfth book, High Rhulain, we're introduced to a Loch Ness Monster-like creature called Slothunog. It only shows up for one page, but it makes up for it by being the most spectacular page in the book.
Here I've decided to draw these two creatures, depicting them as real prehistoric reptiles in keeping with Jacques's claim that he didn't use fictional species in his stories. If you know your fossil snakes, you might have figured out (or guessed) that Deepcoiler is a Palaeophis. Slothunog, meanwhile, is a Nothosaurus, a Triassic reptile that was the ancestor of the more familiar plesiosaurs. These two characters only appeared in one book each, so they never met, but I like to imagine that if they did, they'd be something like Maelstrom and Cretaceous from the second Ice Age movie.
