That depends on what your mark is. I like using a symbol to mark my stuff and you can always be clever with how to incorporate that. But regular "THIS BELONGS TO ME" watermarks do make the art ugly when repeated over the whole picture.

Incorporate signature into the work. Like branding on a handbag, the branding on a motorcycle or something like that. its hard to get rid of and can be made to look good. ^^

Now you have me picturing Zuko from Avatar with a large, slightly lighter than his skin "Z."

Yes! I don't even use a signature, because I don't like it in my pictures.

Gotta say, wish more artists would. like 30% of the time reverse image search doesn't work for art I like and want to find the creator of, even if the other 70% does.
You do you though.

but they tend to be a good way to fend off art theft. it stinks artists have to do that at all though :<

I agree, also the fact that a lot of companies tend to steal fanart (such as Pokemon or Naruto or Undertale etc.), print them on shirts or whatever and pretty make profit from artists from dA or other art websites without the original artist even knowing.
I myself am paranoid by this so I put watermarks on my work

Yeah. That is just so frustrating :< I probably ought to start adding watermarks to my art as well to be honest.

yeah I mean, even Sakimi-chan watermarks her work and she still has a fan base. So why shouldn't we do the same?
it only looks ugly if the watermark is HUGH and covering alot of the details.
Another way to make sure your work doesn't get stolen is to upload a middle to low quality of your work on art websites and printing them high quality for cons or whatever.

Exactly. I feel like there is such a thing as a pretty and subtle watermark that still does its job. I hadn't thought of uploading it at a lower quality- that's pretty clever :> It seems like it would make the art less appealing than a watermark would, but I can definitely see that as an option.

yeah a lot of photographers have nice watermarks that look like that belong to the picture even.
it doesn't even have to be your name it could be a logo or whatever.
yeah, my art teacher told me about the low quality upload thing and also if you don't want to lower the quality he told me an other option is to upload it in a smaller size than the original.

All they do is hurt the viewer. It's really no better than a company adding DRM to games, only hurts the player.

The only way to make watermarks effective, is if they block so much of the image that you can't even see enough of it to enjoy it. Most these annoying watermarks I've seen that are transparent, but cover the whole damn picture, I could easily remove in photoshop/gimp/any photo editor, in less than a minute's time. It doesn't stop thieves, just pisses off your fans.

I think if that is the case, then fans need to become a little more mature. It is very silly to get so angry over something which makes an artist you like feel more secure- I realize that watermarks do obscure the art, but they do not remove the value and beauty of it, and I think it is rude to try and tell others what to do over something that does not hurt or affect you. But that is just my opinion and I can understand why you might feel differently.
It is also pretty difficult to remove a watermark and still keep the full quality of the art piece. Some people might be determined enough to do it, but probably not very many.
