Lionfish 1

By Ellygator
(2020), 18x26", Pencil and pastel crayons on grey paper.

I've always been fascinated by lionfish. If I go to an aquarium, that's usually the first tank I seek out (and seahorses and octopus!).

I know that in Florida they are an invasive species and are considered a nuisance fish, but I just couldn't help wanting to hang a pair in our living room.

I'm hoping to start its companion today, provided the rains let up and I can paint outside. Pastels in the house are just a cleaning nightmare waiting to happen!

So freaking amazing! I to sigh with regret that they're an invasive and dangerous fish yet are so beautiful!

Thank you! Every time I visit an aquarium that hosts them I could stay and watch them for hours...

Thank you! There's so much going on with spots and bands and color transitions, not to mention all the spines... I've really come to appreciate how intricate these fish are...

:) you're absolutely welcome!  lol... i've become such a minimalist with my drawing style that i can't imagine attempting such intricate detail... especially in color :faint:

I like about your art that you see and capture the essentials, though! Color was a bit daunting for me as well, after so many years just working with graphite. The seashells series I did was a good way to limber up and get less nervous!

I loved them as a kid, they are truely fascinating creatures!

Great drawing as well, just like so many of yours!

Thanks so much! It was fun to work out the intricate arrangement of spines and fins...

Yeah, I can imagine that. Looks like a lot of work, too ;-)

I like to work for like 3-4 hours at a time and then pick it up again the next day. It's a good way to keep focus, but not get impatient.

So true. I do the same with my drawings :-)

Beautifully strange, like so many creatures of the sea.

Thank you! I agree! This year has been all about looking underwater for my inspiration, and I've loved it!
