May-sia Day 6 - Proboscis Monkey

In Kutai National Park of Borneo, Felix meets a troop of his fellow proboscis monkeys perched on a tree branch. Felix tries to introduce himself and arrogantly claim he is their new leader. But the alpha male is having none of it and makes loud aggressive honking noises, telling him to back off. This is because most proboscis monkey groups will only consist of one male, said male is the primary defender against external threats and a central figure maintaining harmony among group members. Other males that were born in the group will leave upon adulthood to join bachelor troops. Females will also leave to avoid infanticide or inbreeding, reduce competition for food, or elevation of their social status.
