Elementary HUD (instant menu search) mockup

This is a mockup of how an Ubuntu-HUD-like feature could look in #ElementaryOS. It would allow the user to perform an instant search through the menus of the active application.

It is based on a mockup of a modal dialog by DanRabbit. It could actually behave in a similar way.

What I don't like is that the main app is darkened.

Yes, good point. I was trying to make a clear difference with the background, but when using this a lot, the darkening would become uncomfortable.

This would be really awesome, hopefully someone will give you a hand in implementing it

elementary OS-tailored apps (or in elemntary os human interface guidelines) doesn't recommend having complicated menus. Therefore elementary doesn't need HUD or similar functions

Unfortunately not everything can be so simple.

An office suite, and graphics or video editor requires lots of options, which currently means menu items.

With this implemented, there's no reason to have menu items at all, and applications like GIMP and OpenShot could conform to the elementary HIG.

That's a good point: could a HUD even bypass the need of a menubar in more complex apps?

In case this doesn't fit the eOS HIG, someone suggested to develop it as a standalone app for those who want it. Too bad I don't have that sort of programming skills, otherwise I'd give it a try.

Alright I agree with the idea, either a standalone app or a system integration of replacing the menu bar in non eOS-specified apps, like Abiword. You guys've got me.

Probably, yes :)

In the G+ community there has been an interesting discussion about whether this makes sense or not in the ElementaryOS project, as it tends to remove the menus or simplify them as AppMenus. But many of us agree this would be a great feature to have, specially for non-elementary apps.

I think it by? best implemented for more sophisticated apps like gimp or office.

This could probably be implemented very easily, you'd just need to port over the way Unity does it into this format.
