For example both fighters should probably have their thumbs on the cross guard and their other hands back at their stomach or side or even slightly behind them. The rule hit what offends you the most! Means attacking those forward hands that are vulnerable.

Some styles when using one hand will use the forefinger over the cross guard as well.
