I don't think eye-patches and scars are cliche, quite the contrary: I rather like them. It's a mark of rough-and-tumble background and serious trials. Plus, they have a nice aesthetic I think. Black eye-patches are the ideal, especially when they partially cover a particularly grueling scar.
