Subtropical Arctic?

This stretch looked really out of place for this area of the world. It's in the south-western corner of the Yukon and you can see a bit of the Kaskawulsh Glacier all the way in the back. In the foreground however, it was very dry and sandy. The tree growth was kind of stunted as well. Reminded me of southern Europe more than the Yukon. My guess is that the sand accumulation is caused by strong winds blowing through the drying up river valley. The stunted tree growth is probably a result of the harsh conditions (strong winds, low mineral soil, harsh winters).
