I am sorry for the german language at the text, but I am not able to translate this fairy tale speech into english.
So I tried to translate it into English at least roughly.

COVER PAGE:
From the girl and the little river!
A fairy tale by Edheldil
2021

INTRO PAGE:
An educational fairy tale for young and old.
In the style of the Brothers Grimm.
Or Wilhelm Busch.

Text: Andreas Küntzer (aka Edheldil)
Illustrations: the same

First edition feburary 2021

PAGE 1:
Once a poor man and his dear wife lived by a little river. They had two beautiful daughters and each one had his work.
So it happened that one of the daughters went to the river to do the laundry there, as she always did. And when she got to the river, she said:

Little river, little river, hear me complain.
I've brought a lot of rags.
Father's, mother's, sister's, mine.
Are dirty on arms and legs.

But the little river said:

Little girl, little girl, let me tell you
You shouldn't dare to come here today.
Much raging is my water today,
many bathers have regretted it.

PAGE 2:
Then the girl sat down on the edge of the jetty and began to wash the clothes with the good bar of soap that her dear mother had given her. But immediately the good bar of soap fell from her hand and she said:

Little river, little river, hear me complain.
See what happened.
The soap slipped from my hand.
Fell over the edge of the jetty.

But the little river said:

Little girl, little girl, let me tell you
Don't I hear someone ask about you
Go away and come another time
Otherwise my bed will be your grave.

PAGE 3:
Fearing that her mother would scold her for losing the good soap, the girl leaned over the edge of the jetty and said:

Little river, little river, hear me complain.
I have to venture over the edge now.
With my hand, the soft one
to reach the bar of soap.

But the little river said:

Little girl, little girl, let me tell you
Stop it and make the laundry on other days.
The soap is already gone, away.
You won't find it here again.

PAGE 4:
But when she tried to reach for the good bar of soap, she immediately lost her footing and fell into the cold little river. Pleading she called the little river:

Little river, little river, hear me complain.
Your water is up to my neck.
Lower the tide, raise the bottom
Otherwise there will be girl loss in the end.

But the little river said:

Little girl, little girl, let me tell you
I will carry you to the shore.
But let it be a lesson
if you are warned, you better go home.

PAGE 5:
So the little river took pity on the poor little girl and its waves carried she safely to the nearby shore. There stood the poor little girl, wet and cold, and she said:

Little river, little river, hear me complain.
I've never worn anything wetter.
Only now do I hear your angry roar
warning roaring in my ears.

But the little river said:

Little girl, little girl, let me tell you
I carried a lot of dirt to the sea.
But what is stuck behind your ear
has never rinsed away a river before.

LAST PAGE
And the moral of the story:
Before you wash the white linen
wash your ears, outside and inside!

Die Bilder sind wirklich toll, aber die Geschichte ist auch nicht zu verachten. Die Mischung von Grimm und Busch finde ich wirklich gut gelungen. Heißt jetzt nicht soo viel, aber meine Stimme hast du... ;)

Very imaginative tale, well illustrated! I appreciate the English translation, or else I would have been a little lost.

Not to put a damper on the light mood of your tale, but this is interesting and somewhat related: I watched a documentary once that said one of the leading causes of accidental death of women in medieval Europe was drowning, and they speculated that washing the laundry by the river was the reason. If a woman was alone and fell into a river while doing the wash, while wearing the typical woolen clothing of the period, her clothes would absorb so much water and become so heavy that it would become very difficult for her to stand back up, even in calm waters.

So this girl is extra lucky the river was feeling generous on this day!

Oh yes, I can well imagine that.

Thanks a lot.

Never knew this one, nicely illustrated.

Edheldil3D's avatar

Sure, it's brand new too. ;)

Damn, last time I spoke to Willi he didn't even mention it to me.

:D Ear wax makes a poor replacement for a good bar of soap though.

I'm taking this advice to heart!
