Another zodiac birthstone, Emerald for the month of May..
Something about this gem:
Long ago the emerald was dedicated to Venus, the goddess of love. Lovers were told that this gemstone could reveal the faithfulness of their beloved. Faithfulness was reflected in a bright green color, and a cheating heart was betryed by a lifeless color.
They have been prized by royalty: Cleopatra wore emeralds from her mine in upper Egypt; the Russian crown jewels include many fine emeralds from the time of the czars; and Emperor Nero was said to have gazed through a large emerald to soothe his eyes while he watched the gladiator games.
The ancients prized emeralds, and believed that they held many powers. They felt that an emerald could endow the wearer with the ability to think clearly in the past, present and future; it was said to improve one's memory, quicken intelligence and fortell the future. Powdered and taken as medicine, emeralds were thought to prevent epilepsy and other disorders.
At one time the Romans believed that emeralds ripened into their color, so gems with light patches or pale colors were considered immature. Emerald's beautiful color has always been its lure -- even uncut, unpolished crystals are recognized as something special. When evaluating emeralds, color is the most important factor; inclusions and the like are very common and accepted, even in finer quality emeralds. In fact, emerald inclusions often create a graceful, branch-like pattern, called a "garden."
