What Are Grickets?
Grickets are a fantasy species that are mainly equine based. They also have a lion like tail, and long imp like ears. No matter what clan they belong to, their main goal is to protect their land and the inhabitants in it. They tend to be elusive species and usually avoid exhibitionists in search of new things such as Grickets.
They usually behave similar to that of old norse or greek villages/towns. They each have tasks that usually a group of Grickets will perform to complete it, the tasks are usually; Gathering (food usually), defenders/warriors, foal sitters, and various other things usually depending on the clan. They tend to do a lot of woodwork that could display a story, or possibly be an accessory of some sort. Depending on where the clan is located, there could be more or less wood related things in the clan.
Their diet is basically the same as deer and horses; anything natural that they could find in their area! Some clans take the ingredients found in their land and create some interesting concoctions that they call food.
All Grickets possess a marking on their back that makes it easier to identify which clan they belong to. Clan leaders have this marking on the tips of their ears as well to help identify who they are.
Grickets trade for what they want, they don't have or use any form of currency. They may trade some of their wares, or in some situations they may work for what they want. This tends to be common in most clans except for Aqua. Some members of Aqua clan may still work for what they want though.
There is no common form of religion with Grickets, they don't really believe in any form of the afterlife; they just know they are going back to the ground they traveled.
The life span of a Gricket tends to range depending on the clan. The oldest life span tends to be Terra, closely followed by Aqua and Zephyr, then finally Pyre. The gap can be anywhere from 5-15 years, though the reasoning behind this is unknown. It's rumored to be related to where they live, or their lifestyle.
Grickets are free to leave their clan's territory at any given time, whether it be to explore or otherwise. Though some clan members are skeptical of the outside world, meaning that they may not except the Gricket if they leave and return.
How each clan works is different for each clan, read on to find out more!
Though there are a few things to remember.
Pure Grickets will always:
Lion like tails with mane lining the top into the rest, length varies for clan
Impish ears, either up or down depending on clan
Marking on back that represents clan
Usually longer legs than average ponies
If theses aren't visible, it isn't a Gricket!
Homeland: The Frozen Mountains
The Pyre Clan is tended to be thought of as the boldest clan of Grickets, creatures learn fast not to mess with them. Some identifying features are their thicker fur to keep them warm in the Frozen Mountains, theses are found by the chest and shoulders for the most part. Pyre clan members' ears point upwards and always have a marking of some sort on them that is also on their tail. Their tail is shorter than the average Gricket, this is also true with their height, while Grickets are usually tall Pyre Clan is the opposite of this statement. fur coloring is a range of any warm color, their mane could be any color really and is usually messy as well as styled shorter in both males and females. If it is grown out, it's usually braided.
Their life in the mountains is anything but easy, though it is easier now than it was when the Pyre Clan first came around. Their homes are carved out of the mountains, tunnels connecting homes and other various areas are also carved by the Grickets. Torches and camp fires not only light the tunnels, but also heat them. Warriors may take it upon themselves to set up camp outside of the mountains though they usually aren't asked to do so.
These Grickets rely on each-other for survival and no one is turned down for help. Families help raise each other, sometimes living together while warriors are away. Everyone takes care of each other, no matter what happens.
Hostile animals inhabit not only the area around Pyre Clan territory, but some inhabit land inside of it. Warriors are trained to protect the clan from these hostile beasts, warriors build their own weapons from the large pine trees in their area. Ranking is established by paint markings on the face of a warrior, these markings are usually in a mask pattern. Warriors will proudly display scars from battles or attacks, stories usually follow these displays.
Rely on and trust Zephyr Clan for certain materials
Don't interact much with Aqua Clan, due to differences in nature
Neutral towards Terra Clan, but tend to help each other when needed
AquaHomeland: The Crystal Lagoon
Usually referred to as the most graceful or generous clan, Aqua Clan members are proud of their looks as much as their generosity. These Grickets are able to make peace with nearly any other creature, so they don't focus much on fighting or training warriors. Their slim and swift bodies allow for quick movements in water and on land. Long flowing mane is common in especially females, with accessories such as shells and ferns in it. This clan has horns that usually curve back or around the ears that are pointed downward. Aqua Clan also usually has more markings than their southern counterparts, this adds to their elegance.
This clan is collectively, a generous and prideful one. Considering themselves the higher ups to other Grickets, since they have actual buildings and proper food. The buildings aren't big, as to not give away where their camp is, but they are still designed and decorated in an Aqua Clan way. This clan also possess slight magic from the horns they have, this magic tends to be water based. They use it to complete small tasks, feeling it'd be rude to show off with it.
For the most part, these Grickets are generous to any creature they meet and are curious to learn new cultures and lifestyles. If they do act brash towards anything, there usually is a very good reason for it.
Some traits that belong only to this clan are; Curved horns that contain water based magic, extra markings, slim build and smooth oily coat for swimming.
Aqua Clan is known for using their charisma to trade for things they'd like, this includes materials and sometime food. Though, this clan will fish or forage for their own food then use herbs to spice up their food.
Rather close to Zephyr Clan, due to the materials they can get from them
Avoid Pyre Clan, opposite natures are said to have caused problems in the past
Often seen with Terra Clan, they get most of their herbs from them and are rather friendly
Names are usually of Greek origin
TerraHomeland: The Azores
Leaders: Alvar and Eeva
Terra Clan is known for how carefree and yet, some how productive they are. They have natural colors for fur and shaggy mane that can come in many colors, they also have usually short horns by their downward pointing ears. These Grickets enjoy social interactions and try to incorporate fun into anything they do. It's still a mystery to the other clans how they get so much work done with all the other activities they do.
This clan is full of keen farmers so they try to grow all the food they can. The food they grow tend to be a popular trade item with any clan. Always trying new things with their food, due to their curious nature, they may find something good that any other clan would only come near out of politeness.
Accessories in this clan are common in both males and females and tend to be flowers or somthing plant related. Flower crowns are a popular choice.
Whilst clan life is rather easy and joyful, these Grickets care a lot about their history. Foals are taught from a very young age about their ancestors and clan history. It would be a lie to say that they aren't prideful of their history.
This clan is also the only one to have two leaders, this comes from them being independent and wanting to stand out from other Grickets. The two male leaders and one female, allowed it since the clan was so large even from the beginning of Terra Clan. The couple have an heir that will be named leader once he finds some one to lead with, as said in the clan's history.
Good trade partners with Zephyr Clan, due to the clan not growing their own food
Not seen often with Pyre Clan, but not afraid to help out when needed
Very close with Aqua Clan, said to be best alliance between any of the clans
Names of Finnish origin
ZephyrHomeland: Above The Uyuni Plains
Little is actually known about the Zephyr Clan, they're the only clan to have wings so they spend most of their time in the sky. This elusive clan is known by the others for their pastel fur and tied up hair, in any kind of style really. their ears point upward, horns are uncommon. Their wings have an ombre effect that gets darker towards the edge of the wings.
Zephyr Clan is seen as the most regal, they call their leader a king and have interesting ways of running their clans. They are also able to find or make things that the other clans are not able to do, this makes them great at trading.
Though the clan doesn't really need to worry about fighting, Zephyr Clan trains warriors that usually specialize as an aerial unit. Usually these warriors will fight alongside another clan, to try and help them out. Training is unforgiving, but still not as harsh as it is for Pyre Clan.
Zephyr Clan eats an interesting arrangement of food. Since they don't hunt or grow their own food, they trade with other clans to gain food. This means that they may be eating fish from Aqua Clan while eating some strawberries from Terra Clan. They may have the most divers meals out of all the clans.
These Grickets may act snobby towards outsiders at first, due to the way they were raised. But they will never actively shun any creature, unless there is a reason.
Great trade partners with Pyre Clan, not really an alliance though
Good friends and great trade partners with Aqua Clan
Gain most of their food from Terra Clan, very close to each other
Names of Slovenian origin
Hybrids and Unaffiliated
Not everything stays the same, some Grickets feel the need to leave the clan and affiliate themselves with another equine species. This means there are hybrid Grickets being born, the rate seems to be rising as well. Most hybrids will still have the long impish ears, but they usually will point up regardless of the clan the Gricket was from. Hybrids will also not have a lion like tail, it is rare to see a hybrid with one. The patch on the back that usually marks the clan the Gricket is in, is still there but faded into the fur.
