Chapter 1: The Newcomer The air above the Sea of Glass was different than the air in the deep desert. Here, near the edges of the Fort, it smelled of sulfur, sun-baked stone, and the distant, metallic tang of the great airship docks. Sunniva banked hard to the left, her wings catching a thermal rising from the obsidian outcrops. Below her, the Fort looked less like a castle and more like a jagged crown of stone hammered into the earth. There were no banners of kings or queens here; only the utilitarian grey of Captain Halloway’s outpost. To the humans, it was a frontier defense. To Sunniva and the surviving desert Kobolds, it was the first place that had ever truly felt like sanctuary. As a member of the Captain’s Guard, Sunniva’s mornings were spent as the eyes in the sky. She scanned the horizon for the shimmering heat-wraiths of the Drow or the shifting sands that signaled a desert predator. Today, however, her eyes were fixed on the silver speck emerging from the clouds:
