Ultimately, his initial shouting didn't work. Fall was slowly starting to approach, and thus the bear was hungry, looking to fill up for hibernation. It started to walk closer, panting and grunting threateningly towards Elio, warning him to back off.

Elio did not heed the warning. He shouted again.

That was his error, as the bear approached further and raised its paw.
