I tracked down a book with this story in it based on your intro, here. Dahl was one of the great ones. And now, I know the word exegetical, so my life was enriched in more ways than one.

Ha! that's excellent. Indeed, would love to make it into a story about a manga making machine. I would name it: Osamu Tezuka. 
I am familiar with some of his titles. You think he produced work as prolifically and unimaginatively as a machine?
As prolifically yes, but not as unimaginatively. I've read that he was capable of producing 10 sequential pages a day. Wicked fast. They don't call him The God of Manga for nothin'!
