**EDIT: So I refined the headcanon a little to answer the question some folks had asked me about Vinyl's albinism.**

----------

So :iconel-rancho-unicorno: mentioned the idea of Vinyl Scratch being an albino that dyes her hair  and I simply couldn't help myself. So I took the idea and drew it and played around with it. Because I can. o3o Aaaaand it was a bunch of fun!

So yeah, let's talk about the possible headcanon behind this? O:

I did some more research and decided to refine my headcanon a little more for Vinyl as well. Let's simply cut to the chase here; Albinism, despite being pulled from the latin word for white, does NOT mean the creature exhibiting albinism is white. It means a lack of pigment, whether it be in the hair, eyes, and/or skin. This all depends on the type of albinism, the level of pigment lacking, and what is exhibiting the albinism. Basically, just because something is albino, it doesn't make it white. It can affect one of the things (eyes, hair, skin) listed, two of them, or all of them.

In horses, there actually isn't a true albino (almost no level or a complete lack of pigment/melanin). They don't exist. The closest to albino a horse gets to is usually off white colors, which includes Vinyl's actual coat color, a white-cream of sorts. You can take a gander at said colors at the bottom of the page of this link:
www.bio.miami.edu/dana/dox/hor…

Now with that said, this is my headcanon for albinism in the MLP world.

Like our world, there are two types of albinism: The type where there is almost no level of pigment, and then the type where their is some or slight levels of pigment. Since I'm staying with the fact that an albino with almost no or a completely lack of pigment level doesn't exist in ponies, their primary form of albinism is where there is still some level of pigment in their eyes, skin, and/or hair. Just how much pigment an albino pony has depends on the type of albinism they harbor.

For Vinyl, she has something similar to Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) type 2. This basically means her body makes a minimal amount of melanin, which results in her having very pale, fair skin, very light blond hair, and a white-cream coat. What's common with this type of albinism is blue eyes, but Vinyl ended up with a shade of magenta-red eyes (that can change depending on the circumstances). Either way, they have enough pigmentation in them to be not as sensitive as other types of albinism. Even still, her eyes and skin is still more sensitive to very bright light, typically sunlight, than what is normal, enough to cause some level of discomfort.

As a foal, she was teased for her unusual appearance, so once she hit her teenage years she began to painstakingly dye her mane, tail, eyebrows, and eyelashes to make it look like she was a natural blue-haired mare. It only helped after she moved to the city, where not many ponies actually knew of her until after she became famous. (Octavia's the only other who's seen the adult Vinyl in her natural state; she finds it very attractive, but Vinyl still continues to dye her hair).

Due to the sensitivity of her eyes and skin, she almost constantly wears her glasses and has an affinity for the night. Well, that, and the fact that she likes the look the glasses give her, and that she is a very well known DJ for a night club.

I'd write more but I'm sleepy and I don't think I have much else to add. All I know is that it was ridiculous fun to draw, and Vinyl really does look good as an albino. o3o Sooooooooooo as always, feel free to ask if you have a question and thanks a bunch for stopping by! C:

Wow, really nice theory you have))) That would explain a lot of the details about Vinal such as why does she wear glasses, have red/magenta eyes (depending on which direction you prefer, canon or fanon) and stuff. Nice art btw)))

Just a thought, but considering the range of colours ponies seem to come in we can probably take it for granted that their pigmentation probably doesn't work like real horses. I therefore see no reason why there couldn't be albino ponies.

This is a great headcanon. Very detailed and matter-of-fact.

Personally, I had a funny story for a headcanon for Vinyl: she's Twilight Sparkle's aunt. Twilight and Shining Armor's grandfather was still charming and virile and managed to spawn another kid around the time Twilight Velvet was pregnant with Twilight.
I got the idea when I looked at Vinyl and thought: "You know, her mane and coat look a lot like Shining Armor's..."

Hmmm What do traditional pegasus tails look like, just wondering? C:

If you mean in history there's actually no such thing as a "tradtional pegasus tail", as far as I know. A pegasus for the most part was basically a horse with wings on it's back, but there are some depictions of them having tailfeathers instead of a horse's tail. I've decided in my headcanon that they essentially had two tails; the horse tail and tailfeathers to help them steer in flight.

Oh I see. I was wondering why your pegasi have tailfeathers, and perhaps they were some sort of thing due to cultural differences.

That's awesome headcanon that incorporates her pink eyes and those ever-present shades into more than just a stylistic choice..

That flummoxed stare in the center is pretty hilarious.  Don't ever change, Scratchy.

After learning how to accept who she is, I don't think she'd be willing to change unless she really needed to. o3o

I don't think so, at least not yet. For all we know she didn't speak because they didn't find a voice they thought would suit her.

That could be as well. Still an intriguing possibility.

Red eyes are ok, albinos can have them. Yes, I'm talking about humans, because in my town there is an albino and he has red-pink eyes ^^
I love your headcanons anyway *^*
