The Element of Magic

Something I did a little earlier when I had some free-time on my hands. I decided to give some legit shading a go on the cintiq, and for one of my first attempts I don't think I did terribly. Still need a lot of practice, of course, but I like how it came out. :3 Also, if you think this looks familiar, that's because it's the sketch I did of Twilight in the top right corner HERE.

This is the first of one of the painting series I plan on doing for the Mane 6. This entry is for my "Standard Model" series, where I make an individual pic of each of the Mane 6 members and show case both what they represent as an Element of Harmony, and a little bit of their magic in some form. For this series I also decided to go a bit anthro with them since I haven't actually done anthro-based stuff for Bronycon and the like. They're anthro enough to stand on their hind legs and have hands instead of hooves, but not so much that they need clothes. Basically a "Pint Pony" version of how I draw the ponies anthro, I guess. xD  With Twi for this image, I decided to remain relatively simple with her showcase since we all know she's a powerful pony as far as magic goes but I did get a little crazy with the background because I wanted it textured.

Anyway, I also have a bit of headcanon to go with this as well!

Being living embodiment of the Elements of Harmony has inhanced the Mane 6's magical prowess so that it surpasses that of the average pony when they aren’t directly using them, and have their magical power increase significantly when in direct use of the Elements (to deity-like levels to be specific). Just in case it’s needed, here’s the link to my headcanon on magical elements and their subcategories.

As far as Twilight is concerned, she's mostly associated with Energy. Heavily so, I should say. Even before her ascension into becoming an Alicorn, Twilight Sparkle’s magic level is unnaturally high and saturated. Which means she can use almost every element known to the sapient world, with her preference leaning toward Fire. I imagine her having a photographic-like memory (that can lapse in some instances), and as such she’s able to cast any spell that was shown to her only once, and master almost any spell she encounters within a few days. While she has great control over her magic, it isn’t as refined as the likes of Rarity and Fluttershy. But in its stead lays absolute, devastatingly raw power, which is the main reason why she prefers to keep her magic under complete control rather than let it go completely unshackled, even subconsciously.
