Alrighty, so here she is; Vinyl Scratch! Many of you were asking about whether or not I'd draw her anytime soon, so I hope this answers your question. :3

Vinyl's a really fun character to think of headcanon for, specifically because she's a background character so she's pretty much a blank slate in comparison to other characters. That just leaves more room for headcanon, while giving just enough to work as a good basis for the character. x3

As far as her personality goes, I see Vinyl as a scruffy pony who's a tad on the short side. She's an artist at heart who’s extremely passionate about music of all forms, especially dubstep and remixes. She’s relatively laid back, and it’s hard to get under her skin, but if you ask her about anything music related be prepared to have a very animated and enthusiastic Vinyl on your hands. She actually has that little quirk many artists have, the type that usually keeps one up late at night simply because inspiration decided to pay a visit. Due to this, as well as her work typically being during the night-scene, Vinyl doesn't get much sleep. Her work causes small bouts of insomnia in her and she has light bags under her eyes, but she doesn't let that deter her any... although she has a huge affinity for naps due to it. o3o

Parents Headcanon: Headcanon doodle- Vinyl Scratch's Parents


Vinyl Scratch was born to a family that, unlike Octavia, had to live paycheck by paycheck. Her mother was single and widowed, due to the sudden death of her wife Starfire, and had to work two jobs in order to make ends meet. As a result, Vinyl was basically looked after by her older brother, Vintage Record (not his canon name since he doesn’t have one I don’t think.). Regardless of any of this, Vinyl had herself a pretty decent childhood.

Now as you may know, I've the headcanon that Vinyl is actually an albino pony, and as such, her skin is a bit sensitive to the sun, as well as her eyes (she can see just fine, just some bright light somewhat irritate her). It's because of her very unique appearance that the poor thing was bullied. She tried to knock it off as it not bothering her all that much, but it in fact did, to the point that when she hit highschool, she began to painstakingly dye her mane, tail, eyelashes, and eyebrows to look normal. Many of the ponies in her hometown still knew of her albinism however, so her laborious work only began to pay off when her family moved into the city of Manehatten, where she finished the remainder of her highschool years.

Vinyl discovered her love for music at an early age, specifically when her brother managed to scrounge up the money to take her to a dubstep concert. Vinyl appreciates all forms of music, however her favorite is definitely Dubstep. She and Vintage would play around with old record players and would disc-jockey, and when Vintage Record managed to buy his own equipment he allowed Vinyl to use it as well, teaching her tricks along the way. It wasn't long before she became fantastic at it, and it's through this that she learns she wants her career to be in music.

The mare, due to her average grades, wasn't able to get into the college (a prestigious college in Canterlot) she wanted to on a full scholarship so she had to pay most of her way into college via jobs and loans. It's here that she met Octavia, due to both of them going in for the Music program the college offered, and because Octy was Vinyl's roommate. As we all know, Vinyl has more of an affinity for modern music while Octavia prefers classical music, or just orchestra in general (including orchestrated music done for movies and games). But the two of them can appreciate good music when they hear it, regardless of genre. Despite the opposites of their personalities and general music taste, the two of them get along far better than what folks would assume and became the best of friends/girlfriends (whichever works for me, so it's whatever you prefer), and have since stuck together years after graduating. I actually think it wouldn't be all that unusual if the two of them collaborated on some music just for the fun of it when hanging out, to see what they can come up with (some of them ending up so well Vinyl would play them in the clubs she works at now).


It was some time after graduating that Vinyl managed to snag her first gig, and from that point on she built herself up to be one of the most popular DJs in Equestria. It's through her career that she met fellow musician and now life-long best friend, Neon Lights.
