Longtail Scissorjaw - maxillongi bipinna

Scissorjaws are deep sea predators, they eat anything that stands in their way. Many species, like the longtail scissorjaw, live near hydrothermal vents, where many species congregate and they have a higher chance to catch something.

Once they've found a promising place, scissorjaws wait with their extremely long jaws wide open, only to close them with a quick turning of their head to catch anything that was swimming by.

No species' eggs are safe at the bottom of the ocean, so almost no species lays them there. This includes the scissorjaws, which have converged upon a similar strategy as the broomouths, releasing their gametes into the water and hoping for at least some of them to find eachother.

Young scissorjaws are born quite small to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the ocean, where they would be eaten by scavengers, so for the first year and a half of their lives they must feed exclusively on marine snow before they're big enough to catch prey.
