I have a different philosophy about this sort of things: Never let a label become a source of pride. As soon as you call yourself "proud to be a ___", that creates an "us", and makes it easier to see those who do not identify with that label as "them", and when that kind of pride is awakened, either by being appealed to or challenged, it can lead you to doing awful things, as the last month has shown. This goes for gamers, cinemaphiles, athletes, scholars, whatever. Take joy in your belonging or hobbies, but don't let them define you to this point, only monsters lurk that way.

Personally, I keep those things in check by applying self-deprecating labels to myself, keeps my ego down when I realize that this hobby is not something significant in the end.

I disagree with your philosophy.

Year and a half later and I've seen nothing to prove me wrong.

Philosophy can't always be "proven right", mate. It's simply a matter of opinion.

Depressing but true. That's why I find it so hard to stand on this issue, that people are getting so bent out of shape for video games.

well people end up growing attached to anything really, I think that because we are such social creatures we want to find people like us so that we can feel... whole? when someone "attacks" (insults, criticize, etc) the "pack" they lash out. its the reason people get so defensive about things, and the root of every single political argument such as Religion or Feminism or whatever it is that catches their fancy at the moment. i agree with you wholeheartedly, take your stand for what you believe in but don't let that stop you from thinking about humanity as the pack.

Proud to be one as well. A month ago before the whole gaming scene went full retard, it's okay to be called as one. Now everyone and their grandmother villifies the term because of the actions of a few. Even major sites are running op-ed that are vicious and blindly targeting a whole group of people with diverse background and only happened to have a similar hobby and sadly these are from supposed professionals.

The hashtag #DescribeAGamerIn4Words makes me SMH and just how vile and petty people can be.
