A tale inspired by Japanese legends and written by Herb Montes

Ancient Japan is a mountainous land surrounded by oceans. The people are farmers and hunters who tell legends of magical spirits and creatures that would live in the forests and mountains. Some of these spirits are magical foxes who are called "KITSUNE" (it is spoken like KEE-ZOO-NE). They can change their shape and often try to look like humans.
In the valleys one can find places to fish in the many lakes and ponds. It is at a distant lake young Tojiro hopes to catch fish to add to his family's daily meal. But Tojiro has little luck so he walks the long trip home hurrying to get there before the sun goes down. He knows it gets very cold in the mountains and being outside at night would not be safe with many wild animals about.
Then as he walks down a little path Tojiro sees a rabbit run by.
