Anim8tor is free and small. I consider it more intuitive than Blender - especially when it comes to modelling. I use it often, because I like simple UI. It lacks a lot of features when compared to bigger apps tho, so prepare to use other tools in your workflow if you go more into using Anim8tor.
Even that I really recommend it as an entry level 3d app, because basic techniques apply everywhere
Oh... and community is maybe not very big, but friendly and helpful
